Are work ethics important to you?

It seems to me nowadays that work ethics aren't that important. I was with a company for about a year and the 8 months that I was there I noticed a coworker that was unethical such as taking credit for sales that weren't theres, coming late (20-30 min) every week, surfing the web instead of doing work etc. I liked my job but after being exposed to this I went to several higher people regarding my concerns and felt that they weren't taking it seriously, I than put my two weeks in, that is when they did an "Internal Investigation" on the coworker proving the above and that I was right, I was told something would be done but after being moved into another position and getting a raise I saw that nothing was done so I just left. It took a letter to the president to finally have the situation resolved. Needless to say I am unemployed, trying to make ends meet because my pay was a huge part of our income. I honestly feel that what I did was right but some people might say otherwise. It really was a difficult decision I was in. I'm now working on opening up a couple of my own businesses.
