A friend of mine started using this drug a few months ago. She is dropping weight! I was wondering if anyone else has had experiance with it. I asked one of my Drs at work about it. He said that it was originally used as a seizure medication as well as for pain management. It is widely used now as a mood stabalizer and has been loosly used as a weight loss tool. Can any one give some experience tips?

My husband and I visited a weight loss clinic about a month ago after going to the gym faithfully for 6 months with NO results. Of course we are healthier because of it, however, we didn't see the weight loss. The doctor prescribed a combo of topamax and phentermine. My husband is down 22 pounds so far. I am down 12 pounds. Basically it makes you not hungry, but not only that, sugary foods tend to taste bad as well as carbonated beverages (they taste flat). We've had a lot of success using it. Its not for the long term but it has helped us establish a habit of making better food choices and eating smaller portions. I love it.

Hmm... That's very interesting about effecting the taste of some stuff. I'll have to ask my friend if she has noticed that. So you have been usig it for about a month? How long did the Dr want you to keep using it?

Hi..I happen to be the friend that is on Topomax. I did notice that sodas sometimes taste flat, but once in a while they are okay, just not like they used to. I certainly can't eat very much like I used to. I have lost about 44 lbs in four months. I do have to say that I was perscibe this, along with cymbalta for Bi-polar disorder. I do experience tingling in my hands and feet, sometimes knees, when my dosage is changed. I also wake with strange blurred vision and struggle with, what my Dr. calls, "word searching" where I can't get simple words out or I jumble them. It can be either very frustrating or quite amusing. These are meds I will be on for a long time and the weight loss is a huge bonus for my self esteem. Topomax is worth the other side effects, but it can be frustrating at times. I have been told that hte vision problems, although the only last a few seconds when I wake are due to the pressure in my brain on the occular nerve.

Same here! I have the tingling sensations and the 'word searching' too! And sometimes I completely loose my train of thought. I'll have an idea to share and then POOF! its gone. For some, it only reinforces the fact they think I'm a complete loon! LOL! Oh well. I can't eat as much either and my mouth is dry all the time. But looking back at my eating habits, I wasn't eating because I was hungry most of the time anyway. Glad to hear from ya! :)

My boyfriend has used this medication before, for seizures and he hated it. I don't think that he lost weight but he did start hallucinating.

Well that's interesting. Actually seeing things or was it skin tingling type of things he imagined? My Dr did mention tingling, but he said it was temporary. Was this why he hated it, or was it because of other things?

His mom has told me that he would start talking to people that wasn't there, while on it. I asked him about this earlier today and he told me that it also made his joints sore. Mainly his knees and elbows. I hope that your friend doesn't have these side effects while on it.

My wife takes it and it really helps with her headaches. Been on it about a year now with any back side effects. It did curve her appetite and she loss weight when she first went on it and her doctor is talking about increasing the dosage to help her loss weight. I believe Topamax has this listed as a side effect also.

i actually got this originally given to me by my doctor for a pain medication and it has since helped with the weight and such as stated in previous posts as others have said. I have experienced a few of the side effects also but more possitive than negative i would have to say and yes it does definitly help with cravings and weight loss and making foods taste differently. I would say it also works well for pain and such but can make you tired during the day and can possibly cause some problems otherwise with memory in some cases. Just my two cents. Peace Out ~*~J_Dawgs~*~
