Now Here's One To Make You Smile.......

I know I've posted a lot of discussions about animal abuse that have been pretty upsetting. So I've decided to cheer you all up with a positive, heartwarming story that comes from the ASPCA website itself. I hope it brings everyone a smile. ASPCA SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK: BEDSIDE MANNERS When Julie Frank first met Nakai—a ten-month-old Australian cattle dog—at her local shelter, she was immediately told the pup was untrainable. But Julie found the canine sweet enough to take home—and, as it turns out, handled with patience and love, the dog was destined to become indispensable to her. Six years after Nakai entered her life, Julie badly injured her back at work. “The worse it got, the more I depended upon Nakai to do for me,” she says. And when Julie was forced to retire for medical reasons, she had Nakai certified as a working service dog. “One night I stood up and my right knee locked,” remembers Julie. “I found it impossible to straighten, and it was terribly painful. So, at 4:00 A.M., Nakai helped me get dressed and pack, and off to the local hospital we went.” Once at the hospital, Nakai did not leave Julie’s side. The pooch lay with her on the gurney in the emergency room and accompanied her to the X-ray room and to an MRI. “Everyone loved her,” Julie says—and one of the nurses even volunteered to stay with Nakai while Julie had emergency surgery. “When I woke up in the recovery room,” Julie remembers, “the first thing the nurse said was, ‘Your dog is here to see you.’ That really perked me up. I looked down and there she was.” Nakai jumped up on Julie’s hospital bed and stayed there until she was released. “No dog is untrainable,” Julie says. “It just takes some time, love and patience. I don't know what I ever did in my life to deserve Nakai, but we formed an instant bond that has gotten stronger everyday. She truly is a gift.”

What a wonderful and happy story. I just love hearing this kind of stuff. If only all animals were given a chance to become someones blessing, as this dog, obviously was. It's so wonderful that they found each other.

If all animals were given that chance, I think there would be way less strays running around. Thanks hon.

Dogs are wonderful pets. I still find it amazing after 13 years of having ours that he likes to be touched - the small pets we had before always seemed to be frightened. It is great to see him roll on his back to have his tummy rubbed. I was surprised in the story that the hospital were so understanding and allowed the dog beside her. I am not sure that would have been allowed in England with all the health and safety laws at the moment. We don't seem to be allowed to do anything.

There are one or two hospitals around here that have a difficult time even allowing the seeing eye dogs inside. It takes a pretty big ruckus to get them to change their minds.

Great story, and so true. Dogs are like children, they are all different and need patience, kindness & love to grow properly, inside and out. Thanks for sharing this uplifting, heartwarming story, Katlady :D

Nice story katlady, it's really inspirational and warm enough to bring a smile on anyones smile. It really is true when they say that a pet is a very close companion to some1 nomatter how they see it. A dog is the only creature to which you can say anything dumb and it won't make fun of you. INfact it'll probably do something more silly to top it up :D

What a touching story, Kat. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Goes to show, a dog that's bonded with it's owner can be trained no matter what anyone says. It was the same way with Dom. I had a tough time with him, training-wise, but now that he's totally bonded with me, he will jump the moon for me.

That's the same for my Buddy. Even though he went through all the pain of being trained for fighting by the previous owner, with a lot of love and kindness he has turned into such an awesome big lug. LOL

Certainly, whether the discussion is on abuse or protection, it serves a purpose, and that is to inform the audience who is reading it. I believe dogs are trainable as there are many stories about dogs helping their owners "overcome" their handicaps. I am not sure other than dogs, are other animals trainable too? Perhaps there are, just that many did not try or were not published or publicized.

I know cats can be trained to do certain things, but not to the extent that dogs can. Cats are too independent to let us take that much control over them. LOL Thanks hon.

Oh, I needed that right now. Just something heartwarming and sweet. I've had a rather challenging day and still believing God for a miracle to pay my landlord and this really helped right now. Thank you for this.

It's just amazing what pets can do. This was a wonderful story! I am always amazed that all a pet wants is a little food and water and they will give you all the love a person can handle. Unconditional love. This dog did more for Julie than a lot of humans would have.
