it is funny because I was having a terrible time teaching my son to read, he just was not catching on to it. he had an interest in coins so I bought him a coin book (told values and some other information on them) and I would not read it to him. it inspired him to learn how to read. it taught him history. it taught him art.
one can learn a lot from studying old coins. :)

The benefits of having an hobby is that it is a pastime to break the monotony of your life which is (work, eat, sleep). An hobby actually gives you a reason to live. Not enough people have hobbies.
A real hobby is not something you do on the cheap. If you don't put the money in it... you won't enjoy it and you will get quickly tired of it. An hobby is usually only limited by the amount of money you are prepared to put in it.
The great thing about an hobby is that you can play with it 7 days a week... at any time of day or night. It does not requires you to get dress to go out and be there at a certain time.
People who don't have hobbies usually like to socialise with their friends as a pastime. While this work well when you are young and single... it does become a bit more difficult when you get older and you and your friends are married or in a relationship.
Besides that... particulary for men... socialising usually means drinking. It is as or more expensive than an hobby. And can lead to all sort of problems. Relationship problems, unproductive at work, drink driving and health problems.
I always had a hobby. My first one when I was in my 20's was a model railways with the whole work... like the ones you see in exhibitions. That lasted me 10 years.
Then for the next 10 years... I collected stamps in a big way. I put $30.000 in it. That was followed by my first computer. For the last 13 years... my hobby is the computer. In the last couple of years... I have also started a collection of movies on DVDs as I love watching movies.
Another one of my hobbies during the eighties and nineties was to copy movies from the television on video. I ended up with over 1000 hours of video tapes.

old things help us reminisce the past, if we cant know our past we cant move on towards the future.
do you believe that?
I once collected old coins before but havent have enough interest to continue.
