If you could change history what event would you change...and why?

If it was possible for you to go back and change either a personal or historical event...what would it be; why; and what do you think the outcome might be?
It could be anything...would you stop a war, change the course of history etc? It could also be a personal event that you would like to have a chance to do over. If you could change any of these things what would be your reasons...and what do you think would change as a result?
Knowing that you did have this power...do you think you would exercise it? Choices...everyone has choices and how we make them has a ripple effect that is often only understood after the fact. With the 20-20 vision that often comes with hindsight that is why I would like to know what any of us might choose to do differently if we had the chance.

I have only two things that I would never do again.
1. Give a family member "Power of Attorney" during a medical crisis.
2. Co-sign on any loans.

Sounds like you definitely have things that you would do differently. Your examples are good reminders to all of us...to think ahead even in the midst of crisis.
Your two 'nevers' are something others have gone through and I am sure they may feel the same.
Thanks for adding your input again whiteheather39.

I would stop the assasaination of Abraham Lincoln because he would have made things even better for the slaves if he had been allowed to live. He was cut down in his prime because he was anti-slavery.

I just have to add, Many of the problems we are facing in today's world would never have to even be considered had significant past events not changed the course of history.

Yes, that is the question we'd all have to answer if we did have the power to change 'what was.' Would we, could we...should we? Not something to be taken lightly.

Your short, but powerful idea for change is like 'visitor's' one seemingly simple act could radically alter an outcome. It clearly illustrates our inter-connectedness within the Onesong of our humanity.
Thanks for adding that view to the topic...like visitor's it gives one reason to pause and say...if only.

At one time I thought surely I would go back and save the Kennedys, but knowing what I know now, I would go back to the night Mama Bush was conceived and put salt peter in Mr. Crowley's drink. That would have put the kabosh on a whole lot of monkey business, including the Kennedy assassinations.

I love it! I am all about getting to the root of problem and resolving it there. All too often people seek symptomatic relief and putting a Band-Aide on it. Your approach would certainly change a massive ripple effect on the world at large and it would be fascinating to consider what kind of world we might be living in right now.
Very thought-provoking look at the cause and effect of choices...hmmmm my mind could really trip out on this one. Too bad we can't sit down over a cuppa and let our think tanks explore possibitiles and probabilities of a world that might have been.
Thanks again..brief...but powerful considerations!

I personally would not change anything in the history because I believe that everything (even the most horrific things) happen for a reason and have god and bad consequences (for example nobody likes war because they are bad, no good in them? but world war made a difference, it helped woman to emancipate because they were forced to do things that men did not allow them to do before... god and bad things in everything).
About consequences of changing the history... my point of view is like this changing the history does not change the presence, because if you go back to the history and change it the present is already a consequence of that action. a mystic circle.
another thingy (example maybe)... is it possible to go back in future to kill your parents before you were born? my guess would be that this is impossible... because if you would kill your parents you would not exist and if you do not exist you can not go back in the past to kill your parents.

Well alnilam...I appreciate the way your mind works...because it has the same ability to 'chain' a multitude of possibilities around one concept. Thanks for sharing interesting ideas with your unique 'spin.'
I see things the same way on the idea of changing history. Things always happen for a reason and there is no way of knowing how changing one thing would affect everything else..because it is all relative. To me the best way to escape from a problem is...to solve it. Oftentimes we have to create a problem and work through it not to repeat the process again. So changing what was may not allow us to do that...and we'd probably have a 'do-over' somewhere along the line.
Your comments about killing your parents and not existing is an interesting and rather nebulous concept that gets the mind doing a big hmmmmmmm. Good response...

Hi sxjszwsl..and welcome to perspectives and Mylot.
Wow...you are definitely travelling a long, long time on the way-back machine. You might have a fair amount of 'culture shock' to contend with...but no doubt...it would be an interesting experience.

Hi qudsiakarmin...and welcome to this site and the Mylot experience.
What a lovely idea...it is very reminiscent of John Lennon's song...Imagine. "Imagine there's no countries...it is easy if you try." I like that idea...freedom for all in a peaceful world...yes..it is nice to envision. Thanks for sharing that viewpoint.

This is a good topic my friend, one of my pet peeves!;) If I'm to be asked, I wish that our economy was still as the same as what other superpower countries are now enjoying.
Back then, Philippine monetary exchange was as the same as the US. As I was told, my grandparents and even my parents used to spend small amount for their daily means. They don't have to worry much on what they'd eat, because the supplies then was abundant and clean. Life was just simple, people are contented and there was no pollution.
I wish I have lived during these times, not too many complications for me to worry for a day!;)

Ahhhh yes, to be able to go travel in the way-back machine to another time and place. I appreciate your views...and how it adds some interesting historical understanding to your personal circumstances and changes within your country. Thank you for that.
You certainly are right about how much more complicated life feels from then to now. It is part of why my hubby and I moved from the city we lived in with a population of over 800,000 people to a small town with under 1,000 residents nestled in the hills. Life is for us, much less complicated and yes, the simple life is definitely my preference.
Goo luck with your 'complications!'

Life is nothing short of a long serie of mistakes. So there is no doubt that I would change everything in history... and I would also change my personal life.
But we could only change those things today because we have learned from those mistakes. If we went back in the past without that knowledge... we would probably make the same mistakes again.
World War 2 could have been prevented if we had knew that Hitler was lying to us.
The climate change could have been prevented if we had knew in the 1950's what we know today.
If we had not left Saddam Hussein in power in 1991... we would not be in Iraq today.
If Europe had not surrendered its colonies to the do-gooders of this world... we would not have to deal with multi-culturalism, racism and illegal immigrants. And perhaps... there would not be such things as third world countries today... because the west would have developed those countries.
A small country like France spend billions every year to provide aid to its ex-colonies in order to prevent those people from emigrating to France. If France had retained its colonies... it would have been able to develop those colonies and make them sustain themselve. France would be richer for it... and so would be the colonies.
Australia is a colony... and look at us!
Sure... the Aborigines lost their land... but they were not exactly doing something with it. Furthermore... we feed them by handing them a cheque every fortnight. We gave them some of their land back... and now they charge us a toll to walk on it.

I love the way you think...and it would be great fun to sit down and chat with you about anything and everything. From what we have discussed in our various on-line dialogues there would probably be some things we'd see differently...but that is what makes life interesting.
What you cited are powerful examples of the chain-reation and ripple effect of choices made. I agree with you that hindsight is always 20-20...and that how we arrive at any point is a direct result of making choices within our current level of awareness.
Who knows what would have been different if there had been different paths taken? There is no way of predicting whether we'd be 'better or worse' either. So we are of the same mind here...I hold to the view that life is what's COMING...not what WAS!
Another great post Aussies2007...thanks.
Cheers,
Raia

Whilst it would be tempting to change things I don't think I would interfere with history. Aside from the Butterfly Effect I feel people would become entirely reckless because you would no longer have to take the consequences for your actions - just go back and fix it. Also we would become so pre-occupied with alternatives that we would never realy get anywhere. How many times have we thought if only I had done that instead? If we could go back and change history to see what would happen if we didn't like it we would change it back to the way it was and so on and so forth.
Personally I think that hindsight is as much a gift as a curse. Whilst it is a nice idea to change the past with the knowledge we have in the present surely the point is that we learn lessons from mistakes and change the future - something that we all have the power to change.

What a wonderful, well thought out response...thanks for adding such insight to whatever we are discussing.
I tend to agree with you...and also so life a a series of experiential learning experiences. We learn as much, if not more from our errors in judgement than from things that go 'right.' From my current vantage point I find it hard to regret the choices I made or the things that were absolutely overwhelming at the time...because it lead me to the life I now fully enjoy.
Your closing comment is very telling and true.."the point is that we learn lessons from mistakes and change the future...and yes, that is something we all have the power to change."

Hi, thanks for participating in this topic. My views are akin to yours. Everything that happens to us affects everything else. I truly understand and accept that there is a ripple effect to every choice...the whole cause and effect cycle is a known and immutable law. So yes, life would be different with different choices and as I posted elsewhere...I am more interested in what is coming...not what was.
