I am a writer and I can't tell you what people want to read but I can tell you how you will write your best novel and that is to write what you feel most strongly about and what you love to write about. Writing for the reader rarely works. If you write from the heart, that passion will shine through and people will like what you have written.
Write like no one is going to read it but you. Then read what you have written after a week of not looking at it (Could be just a chapter or more). If it interests YOU, chances are good it will interest others. Write what you know.
Good luck!

The best advice is to ask you, "What do you love to read the most"? That is usually what you would be best at writing. You cannot write what you think other people might want to read or write so to please others. I know, it might make you feel more magnanimous writing about saving lives and puppies or what great deeds someone did, but if you always have your head in romance novels, or you are always reading books about people going off on space ships, the type of novel that make people think you are a good person and have a good heart would be wooden if you write them.
Me I love to read anything that has to do with mystery and suspense, I also like to read science fiction and something that contains fantasy, but not witches and stuff like that. I also love the good guy solving a juicy murder and I am a Christian so I do not like the hero cursing a blue streak and I am also interest in the military, plus I have a weird sense, so I like a little horror. This gives me a range of novels I can write.

I will read a romance to get some ideas, but they are not my favorite. I used to read the nurse stories where a nurse fell in love with her doctor and they got married and I loved those because it was not just about love, but saving people's lives, etc. The story has to have some depth. Many of my friends asked if I was going to write children's books, but I figured that is what everyone assumes you will write. I will write children into my stories, but they do have parents and usually the plot concerns the adults.
