Are Cell / Mobile phones a neccessity?

I have only one friend who does not own a cell phone and she is finally buying one today. She jokes that she is bowing to peer presssure but really her parents will not let her drive the family car without one, in case it breaks down. Clearly her parents think a cell phone is neccesity. What do you think?

Some years ago we lived without mobile phones and we had not a lot of problems. I think that cellphone is good for everyday life because we have more contact with other people but I say that I can live without mobile phone, too.

Yes, I think it makes life a lot more convenient but I am not conviced that they are absolutely neccesary.
