I was clearing out my green bean and corn plants as they are done for the year when I found this huge horsefly. it died shortly after I grabbed it. Did I murder it maybe? Anyhow I just wanted to share these photos of it. This is the biggest horsefly I've ever seen in the city. Now up north at the farm I've seen them larger and been bit by them. Let me say that it does hurt being bit by a fly bigger than this one here. Is this a huge horsefly to you or have you seen bigger? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I don't think it's a cicada as I've heard that they hang out in groups and there was just this one. Anyone help here with this?

I've seen them only a little bit bigger than him but not by much. Sheesh! He's still big enough that you could've put reins and a saddle on him and rode off into the sunset! LOL I've been bit by them too, and it's definitely not pleasant. I swear they have huge teeth!

Wow, that's a real beast! I haven't seen a fly anywhere near that big. In the UK what we call horseflies are just like houseflies or bluebottles but a little bit bigger and usually hag around horses a$$es! lol. I'm certainly glad we don't have any of those bad-boys!

That is a beast alright! It's almost as big as a dragonfly! LOL! I also hate horseflies! I can't stand them. They make me run back inside the house everytime I spot one. I have never seen one as big as the one you showed, but pretty close to it. And I hope to never have one bite me.. I try to stay away and aviod them as much as I can. :) Thanks for sharing.. Me and my husband had a little argument about horseflies one day. He told me that they are just regular flies, just bigger. LOL! Little does he know.. maybe he will find out one day when one bites him!

Webe, I think he knew he didn't have a chance around you..lol...He is huge and I am glad I haven't been bit by one. The little ones hurt when they bite, so anything bigger would probably be scary.

Well it is really hard to say fly to this creature. As an allergic person to bugs, flies and insects I should say that it took me for a while to write this answer. Because i am itching from the moment i saw the picture. Well thanks for sharing grandpa :D

Creepy Horsefly - I hate these things with a passion. HAHAHA!
I got stung awhile back by a bee on my foot and had a hard time walking and wearing shoes for a week. I'm just glad this monster didn't bite me. Ugg! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It almost looks like a locust or a cicada to me. It is bigger than I remember the horseflies being around my grandparents cattle. I was never bitten by one, thank goodness. I would not like to meet him anywhere, at home, in the garden, or on a farm.

That would have to be the largest horsefly I have ever seen. I rarely see them near my house. I guess the dogs, & one of our cats would go for a horsefly. Our mini fox terrir will snap at any fly she sees.
