Do you use incense?

Incense Stick - Smells so good
United States
August 13, 2007 3:49pm CST
I really love incense! It makes the whole house smell so wonderful. I recently came across an opportunity to buy the ingredients and supplies to make my own incense sticks and cones. To get a really good price I have to buy the supplies in large bulk quantities, much more than I could use myself. So it occured to me that this might be a bit of a business opportunity because I'd have to sell what I don't use. But I need to know what kind of market there is for incense to see if it's worth my time and effort to make it myself. My questions are: Do you use/buy incense on a regular basis? Do you prefer sticks or cones? Do you just buy the cheap dollar store stuff or does higher quality (better stronger scented) matter to you? Thanks so much for any help you can give. I just need to get a feel for if this would be worth trying or not.

Thanks Ronnie, I'll keep you in mind for those things. There is a lot of excellent incense coming out of India, I've bought a lot of it. I was just thinking of trying it out for myself and see if I can come up with some unique and beautiful new scents.

I've been burning incense since my high school days..I love the smell of it...I love Patchouli, jasmine, frankincense, strawberry, sandlewood, floral ones...As for price...some of the dollar ones aren't really too bad...like the ones that smell like certain perfumes like opium---There's a India based company that makes incense and it too is usually only a buck or two and I love them--they have scents called Moon, Sun, Forest...I prefer sticks to cones as the cones never stay lit long enough for some reason I think the idea of venturing out and making incense for sale would be a great one...so go for it!!!

I mentioned in my post about the convenience store incense and you are right....It does smell nice but it is terribly smoky and I do put it in a room that I am not in because it is so overpowering. Yes...if you can do better...you should.

I love incense. I prefer the cones because they make less mess although the sticks are ok if you have a suitable holder for them I guess. I tend not to buy cheap incense because I find it has a sort of "bonfire" smell about it lol! I think you do get what you pay for when you're buying that sort of thing - same with scented candles. Actually it's funny you should post this because I considered making my own incense (and other associated things) as a business opportunity a few years ago. I didn't go ahead with it just because I had other things on the go that started to take up more of my time. I think as a business opportunity it is worth considering because there is definitely a market for it. The only thing I would say is that cheap incense is so readily available it would probably be better aiming for the better quality/more expensive market.

Thanks so much for your input Stiletto, I really appreciate the fact that you actually read my post! I was beginning to give up hope. I actually was thinking more along the lines of a higher end, high quality market. I too, either seem to get the cheapo "bonfire" type or the overwhelmingly overscented fumigating type. I want something in the middle, unique and nicely well scented. Thanks again!

oh I'm a total incense fanatic! ahve been for yrs...as for which style so to speak I much prefer sticks to cones...I find that with sticks the variety of scents is plenty in comparison and i just dont really care for cones...I have some and do use them on occasion but its definately not my first choice by any means..

Thanks so much for the input RJ. I too prefer the sticks to the cones. They seem to hold the scent better in my experience. I may have to give it a try and just see what people think of my scents and the quality. :D

I love incense. I buy is whenever I run out and I usually buy it at Walmart. So I have a tip, and here it is, don't buy your incense in the candle section if you buy it at Walmart, go to the craft section, where they also have incense, but for like 1/2 the price.

Actually my post was about making my own and starting a business selling my own. But thanks for the Walmart tip. :D

I have made my own incesne before but I didn't particularly like the result. I'm not sure what caused it but no matter what type I made, be it rose, pine, whatever, it all smelled the same.....like hash. I don't know why it smelled like that. I used salt peter as a burning accelerant and I used argar to make it stick (I may have spelled that wrong). Anyway, something was making it all smell like hash, I would assume it was one of those chemicals.

I love incense. I use them all the time for any reason. I use higher quality cone incense from a local shop for special things but if I am just adding a fragrance to the air I will use anything that smells good from anywhere I find it and I don't care if it is stick or cone.

I love incense, but must confess that I don't particularly like the cones. The only cones I've tried... two types... have been far too smoky and don't last long at all. So, I use sticks most of the time, and sometimes raw incense in a burner, on charcoal. I tend to use more expensive, better quality sticks, because they seem to burn slower, and the scent is more pleasant. I keep a stock of them and buy them frequently, my favourite scents being lavender, patchouli, ylang ylang, frankincense, honeysuckle, vanilla, sandalwood, cedar and pine. There is also a moon one and a forest one I like, but I guess they're mixed scents. Craftcatcher, if you're thinking about an online store, please let me know when you have it up and running, because I would love to try the resulting incense sticks. As I said, I'm not so keen on the cones, but I would buy sticks regularly. :) I'm sure you'll do a good trade with them, so go for it, my friend. They're a very popular commodity, and it's not always easy to get a perfect one. Brightest Blessings and good luck in your venture.

Oh yes... incense is still a very popular commodity as are scented candles. I often use the sticks when meditating and for other reasons, of course. I sometimes have to hunt around for what I really want though and have also considered making my own, for personal use, but if you go ahead with this, I would like to support you all the way, my friend. To that end, good luck in your venture, and Brightest Blessings.

Thank you Darkwing for your input and good luck. I am getting really stoked about this! I had absolutely no idea it was still used so often by so many. Here I thought I was just stuck back in the 60's and 70's! LOL I will definitely let you and all my myLot friends know if this gets to be a reality venture.

I love incense. I usually buy it when the opportunity arises and if it's a scent I love, I stock up on it. I prefer buying it in oriental stores or at craft fairs. I prefer cones, because I think they are less messy and have a stronger scent. Quality definetely matters to me, I occassionally have bought the dollar store stuff, but wasn't very happy with it. That's why I stick with the good stuff from the specialty stores now.

Quality means a lot to me too. I've had some that smelled like a charcoal barbeque in your house. Just nasty. I ordered a kit to make my own homemade, high quality incense. I hope it comes out as well as I hope. It would definitely be worth the extra money if it's as good as I've heard. If it comes out perfect then I'm thinking of maybe starting a little hobby business. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I think it would be a lot of fun.

Asthmatics would definitely have a problems with incense. Hopefully if this all works out I'll be able to come up with something that will make your house smell wonderful but won't bother your asthma. That smokey smell is something I'm trying to get away from too. I don't like it much either. A lot of the cheaper incense does smell like you've had a barbeque in your livingroom.. with luck mine won't smell like that at all.

I agree 100% with what Stiletto said. The cones seem cleaner and safer and those I've bought have had nicer scents, although that may be coincidental. Using specific herbs sounds like a wonderful idea. Maybe you have found a niche market there. Good luck!

Thanks Ann, I like cones sometimes but for some strange reason I'm drawn to the sticks. I think with a little brainwork I could come up with some unique ideas for scents and uses for specific purposes. It started out just as a spur of the moment comment, then a brainstorming idea, I'm beginning to think I should start getting some things down on paper and start making a plan. I didn't realize that incense is still very popular and there is a definite market for a unique marketing strategy. Off topic, but I thought I'd let you know that I took hubby to the doc and he's doing better on the Prednisone. He's still itching like crazy but a lot of the swelling is down and he's back at work. At least he can sleep for a few hours at a time! Finally. Thanks again for your concern.

I too am a fan of floral scents. I love Jasmine, Freesia and Gardenia the best. Lavender is always great and very relaxing. I make my own glycerine soaps and I always make a batch with Lavender essential oil in it. It's great after a long days work.

I love candles too, especially in the winter time. On cool nights I've been know to light up a dozen candles and heat the livingroom with them instead of turning on the electric heater of furnace. That's one good thing about the supplies I'm talking about trying, the scents are great for incense and candles both. If I wanted to branch out later I could. But for now I'm just getting some feedback from people. Thanks for your wishes :D

I buy mine from the dollar store and discount dollar store my favorite being the lavender scented ones. I just wish they would burn longer and be bigger. They are also great to keep bugs away when you have one lit. I perfer the sticks.

Allergic reactions are a real problem with incense that uses a mostly synthetic ingredients. I'm trying to stay away from those as much as possible.

I have not used incense for quite a few years as it makes my smoke detector go off, but candles do as well. I used to love the smell. and I think I would prefer better quality ones. I have fallen love with those bamboo scent diffusers, that are used with scented oils. I do have difficulty finding nice scented oils to use. The glass vase and bamboo sticks I have were a gift from my niece. she didn't care for it as it was very strong. I loved it and it lasted a few months. I found out she bought it at one of those candle home party's and it was $48. way out of my price bracket. now that is something I would like to learn how to make. and possibly something for you to put together with your incense for those that can not have any sort of smoke in their place.

Hi Robin, thanks for the suggestion! If I do decide to make a go of this I would definitely incorporate other nicely scented items such as candles and bamboo and reed diffusers. They are all so much fun to make. I don't think I can limit myself to just incense but that's what got the idea rolling first.

I too love incense. It's great that you can make your own! I used to buy the cheap stuff until someone showed me Nag Champa-which is a little bit more expensive but smells delightful so that's the only stuff I buy now. If your incense is good quality and doesn't give off a 'headachey' smell I'd certianly be interested in giving it a go. I use it a few times a week and I usually use the sticks. They just easier to light and use I think. You'd have to have a selling point for your incense though, like natural products used, or unusual scents.

Nag Champa is wonderful. And I know exactly what you mean by that "headachey" smell. This last batch I got is so smokey and strong I can only keep it lit for a couple of minutes then I have to put it out or it gets too heavy and thick smelling. I like mine lighter and yet still go throughout the house. I also like unique scents. I don't like to smell the same stuff all the time. I love fresh herbal scents and florals the best. I will definitely be doing some thinking about unique ideas and marketing strategies. Thanks so much for your input!

Hello Craftcatcher yes i love incense and in India prayers or 'puja' is not complete without burning incense and yes the smell takes us to a different level in fact if you open the door to our prayer room you will get a whole mix of different incense that was burned during all these years LOL and if you do get to make your own incense ebay ofcourse wud be the best place to sell it - if you are looking for online market. I regurlarly check candles and incense on e-bay and it seems to be a huge market :) and both sticks n cones seem to be popular. All the best i do hope you start your business online or offline and its a roaring success :)
