Are ferrets good pets?

I have heard some people say that ferrets are bad pets because they let off a stink gas, sort of like skunks. That isn't good. Although they are quite entertaining, they like to dance. Would they get along with animals their size?

they make absolutely wonderful pets. they don't spray like a skunk does, but they are Mustelids, belonging to a family that includes weasels, stoats and even badgers. all animals in this category do have a musky, pungeant smell. ferret smell isn't really a bad smell. you do get used to it, and it's a bit like a bonfire sort of a smell, really. they have fantastic personalities. if they are regularly handled they can be very affectionate, and love to be cuddled. one of ours used to like to snooze wrapped around the back of your neck, or in a hood if you were wearing one. they are very very playful, and need a lot of mental stimulation, and it's good to have them in pairs, at the very least. some people keep them in the house, in which case you need to make sure the house is ferret proof. they are escapologists. ours lived in a large aviary, with lots of branches and tunnels, and hammocks and places to hide and play and climb. they were also allowed out and handled every day. they can be walked on a harness, and enjoy it. females should be spayed unless you intend to breed from them. having a season without breeding is very dangerous for them. so spaying is the best bet. they are excellent pets for children, as they are bold, boistrous and robust. they are a lot less susceptable to being injured or biting through fear than rabbits or guinea pigs. ours used to love being let out in the conservatory, and being swept up with a broom. they would chuckle, and bounce away, then bounce back to be swept up again. if you do decide to go ahead with them, do a lot of research first. they are fantastic pets, but you do need to make sure you understand their needs.

My college roommate had a ferret and I never understood why she liked him. It was like having a large rat run around all the time. And that's what he did. She spent more time chasing him and yelling at him then playing with him.

My sister-in-law had ferrets and they are so charming! I don't remember a particularly strong odor, although they do have some natural odor even when descented. I know they demand a lot of time and attention to keep them happy. Here is a link to a piece I wrote on caring for ferrets; you may want to read it before you make up your mind: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/197473/choosing_a_pet_ferrets.html

I've heard that they don't make good pets because they can be aggressive and vicious. I didn't know they gave off an odor. I would think it would be wise to consult a vet or somebody knowledgeable about their temperament before buying one.
