Help! My window air conditioner is dying!

For the past week or so, our window air conditioner has been making a horrible grating noise. Sort of like the sound you hear when someone scrapes their nails on the chalk-board. It's annoying to say the least and our child simply can't stand it. So, most times we keep our window air conditioner off in the computer room. And, that makes it unbearable to be in there working on the computer.
But today, it started spitting cold water! Does anyone know why a window air conditioner would spit cold water? Is there some way to fix the noise? Or, is it just time to throw the air-conditioner to the curb and get a new one?

Oh, no, didn't I mention that part? Yes, it froze up. Actually both have literally frozen over the front. And, now it's just making that weird noise and spitting water. I think both are on the way out.

Odd, this happened to ours last week, Hubby looked at it really good, taking stuff apart in a last ditch effort and had remarkable success! Really good cleaning and oiling of all moving parts,, also found a part that had broke off, after super glueing and drying well it is humming along great.

You might only have to clean the filter. Try having someone you know take a look at it. Air conditioners are so expensive and it wouldn't hurt to clean it first and see if you get get it to working. Nowadays we really need one especially with little ones, because the AC will help us to breath as there might be cause for respiratory problems when it gets really hot, so I do feel for you. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.

I don’t know why it would spit cold water- that doesn’t make sense- sounds to me like it is biting the dust- I think you can pick one up at Wal-Mart for around $100- Not the best one but one that is good enough for a computer room- Or wait until season-end clearance and get one cheaper. Use fans for now.

Hi - try one more solution. Take the air filter out of the unit, clean thoroughly and dry and place back into the unit. This may solve your grating noise. I had a similar experience and this worked just fine. I do not know anything about your cold water difficulty, but you may need to speak to a repairman.

I can think of only two reasons for the unit to spit out water:
1) Your aircon's water drain hole or hose is clogged or plugged.
2) Your unit maybe tilted towards the inside of the house instead of towards the outside.
I think you may have to clean the inside of your air-conditioning unit, You'll probably discover that rust flakes or dirt have caused the problem and have plugged the drain again. It's a good idea to flush the drain/drain pan [bottom of case] with some bleach and water because mold/mildew often forms inside.
If nobody in you household can do it, I suggest you call an aircon technician to have it clean and checked.
If that did'nt worked I believe its time for you to get a new one. ;-)
