At what point will milk just be too expensive to buy?

Since we go through at least one gallon of milk daily, the time is fast approaching when we may not be able to afford milk at all. It's a scary thought, but not unrealistic to think that one day soon, milk could top $7.00 or more per gallon. Right now, it's $4.19 even at the cheapest store in town. I know it sounds silly, but sometimes I think it would just be cheaper to drink water and own a cow. Maybe not! But, it's still a thought. I guess we'll have to stop buying milk when it hits six dollars a gallon.
Sad too, considering that milk is a really healthy beverage. Not at all like the ultra cheap cola drinks on the market. You can buy cola for less than one dollar per two liters in most areas. It's hard to find milk for that price anywhere! So, how expensive would milk have to be before you stopped buying it? What would you buy instead of milk if it got too expensive? Would you buy more cola or soda?

It’s sickening isn’t it?? In my area I’m glad to say it’s still low- but not as low as it used to be- I picked up a gallon 2 days ago a it was $2.38- That was at super Wal-Mart though- In the regular grocery stores it is up over $3.50- what a savings- I agree- it’s getting too expensive- but I can’t not buy it – so I’ll cut something else out instead of the milk.

I know! I know! I can remember ten years ago, when it was $2.30 at any store you went to. Now, I don't think the government subsidizes the dairy farmers as much, so they have to pass cost along to us the consumers. Very sad situation for families with little kids that drink milk.

Milk right now is about $4 a gallon, I've cut way back on mine and have taken to drinking more juices in addition to lots of water. At some point, it will get too high and ppl will stop drinking it and either the price will have to come back down or milk companies won't be able to sell it.

I wouldn't replace milk with cola or soda. As it is, right now I try to not drink sugary drinks, so I mostly drink water, milk, and a bit of juice.
I think I would end up paying the higher price. But I think if the price gets too high, people would buy less, and then the price would have to go down.

Maybe we can now think about synthetic milk. Thats what we do when we run out of something. We make them in the lab.. bingo.

We have been drinking a lot more water and less milk to keep the costs down. Milk, like all farm products, has had a huge cost increase this past year. We have been eating differently to keep within our budget and it is hard to do. We are looking into growing a larer garden enxt year so we dont have to be so dependant on these out of control raising costs.

Your idea of keeping a cow is not bad .But materialising it is difficult in your present life style . In practice what you shall do is reducing marginally the quantity of milk consumption and suplementing the reduced quantity by other cheaper beverage .

If it gets past $6.00, that means that it is officially too expensive.

We only go through about 7-8 gallons of milk each month, so it would have to go really high before we quit buying it. My husband and I neither drink much milk. Our son drinks around a quart a day and we cook with it, but that's about it. It's pretty important that our son drinks milk right now, though, since he is only 18 months old. It would have to be over $10 a gallon for us to give it up, and I'm not sure if we would even then. We would have to cut back on some other stuff to afford it if it went that high, but we could do with less junk food or eating out or something, to make up the difference.
We might also have our son to drink more water. We wouldn't start drinking more soda, though. Just water.

I just bought a gallon Saturday and it was $2.38. I didn't realize milk was that expensive in other parts of the country. We have a lot of dairy farms around here so maybe that's why it's so cheap. If it got up to over $4 a gallon we'd be watering it down a bit. If it hit $5 a gallon we'd be looking for alternatives. I don't drink soda but my husband goes thru a liter a day or better. But I don't think he'd buy more soda, he'd just drink more water or juice.
