Is This "Justice" Without Any Human Intervention?

Earlier this year a man decapitated his Husky pup of a few months, with a chainsaw. Here is part of the article: "Delmas - There were gasps of horror in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday when animal rights activists heard graphic details of how Phillip Matthysen, 31, beheaded his Husky puppy with a chainsaw. Minutes later, the shock turned to fury when the sentence of the "Delmas chainsaw killer" as he was referred to on placards, was suspended in full. Magistrate CE Moldenhauer sentenced Matthysen to 12 months in prison or a fine of R10 000." The marketing consultant admitted in a packed court C that he had committed the gruesome killing and said through his lawyer that he had sawn the dog's head off with the petrol-driven chainsaw in a fit of anger, after his four-month-old pup chewed through a cable running to his security fencing, and killed an exotic parrot. The State withdrew the case against Alex Serate, the second accused. Serate held the dog down during the killing. An earlier warning from the Judge that he would charge them with contempt of court fell on deaf ears when the activists heard the gruesome details of the dog's suffering as the vet's report was read to the court. Dr JH Moll wrote in his report.. "The cream-colored dog's neck was sawn from above, which meant that he could feel everything, and was in tremendous pain until he died" The dog was fully conscious and aware of pain until his spinal column was severed". Here is what happened this weekend. "Johannesburg - The man who caused a countrywide uproar after using a chainsaw to cruelly behead his husky puppy earlier this year, died in a car accident over the weekend." Phillip Matthysen, 31, rolled his vehicle in the early hours of Sunday morning and died on the scene. There were no witnesses. They are not sure if a tyre burst or if the deceased lost control of the vehicle, but he was thrown out of the car when it rolled a few times. The Mpumalanga emergency services was one of the first paramedics at the scene. He said on Monday that Matthysen had clearly died as a result of "massive head injuries". I personally didn't want this kind of justice, but if someone can do this to an animal, in a rage of fury, imagine what kind of punishment he would dish out to his kids, or any other human being for that matter.

I think it's more co-incidence than justice, but it seen sort of fair to me. Karma perhaps?! To be pedantic, I do wonder about the vet's report though. If the cut was made from above, a chainsaw would get through the spinal cord pretty quick. Hopefully the poor dog won't have actually suffered that much, although this doesn't detract at all from the horrific nature of this gruesome act of cruelty. I also wonder about the outcome of the court case. How can this be explained as a "fit of rage" when his friend was holding the animal down? If he'd been holding a stick already and beat the dog, that could have been a fit of rage. To get a friend to hod the animal while he started and operated a chainsaw shows forethought and planning. In a strange way it's actually nice to see that it's not just the UK criminal justice system that's seriously screwed up!

The impression I get from the media is that South Africa is one of the more dangerous places around the world. It's such a shame though, as it also appears to be a beautiful place. I guess it's the same the world over though, nature creates a paradise ands we (humans) move in a mess it all up!

I completely agree with you. That was cruel and disgusting behaviour. It was a puppy for heavens sake and didn't know any better, animals often may act in a way we don't like but it is up to us to train our pets properly for example my cats don't sharpen their claws on the furniture as they know it is wrong.

The best part of your response is that we can train our animals, but ironically and very sad, when it comes to human beings, the same can't be said!

That is animal cruelty at it's worse. Why do people do this to poor innocent animals? That poor Husky puppy never hurt anyone.

Very sad story. I don't understand why people do things like this. Not only to animals, but to children as well. This is just a very sad case. I don't want to say anything mean, but he did have it coming to him. Sometimes whats goes around, comes around. He was a really sick person, he killed his dog in a sick way and he did it out of anger. He should of been locked up. But what is done, is done.

It is a sad state of things, and unfortunately there are millions of cases like this that goes unnoticed. Remember my discussion on the live animals that were fed to hungry tigers in China?

Sounds like the laws of karma at work there. Good riddance. The world doesn't need the likes of him. Although the other guy that held the dog down must be a real freak as well.

I do not understand people today. Like you said to another reader, it is easier to train an animal than it is to train a person.
