How much sleep do we need?

Most of us have probably heard that we should get eight hours sleep every night. Is this really necessary for everyone or does it vary between individuals? I have seen people get by with just two or three hours sleep, but is this healthy?

I definitely think it depends on the individual and how well they function on the amount of sleep they receive. I used to sleep 2-4 hours a night when I was in school, staying up on the internet, doing homework, watching movies, reading etc until the sun began to come up, when I would drag my tired self to bed. I practiced this, definitely unhealthy sleeping pattern, for almost 3 years before I decided i was over being tired and sore and stressed out all the time. I now get 6-8 hours of sleep and find that this better suits my life-style. I get more, better sleep and I can get up and ready in time for whatever I plan on doing with my day. =]

Yup, eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every day is about right. For younger people, I think they need more than 8 hours as they are rapidly developing and growing so yes, it varies from person to person but a minimum of 8 hours a day is about right. I don't think two or three hours of sleep is healthy at all. I mean, would you feel energised after being awake for 21-22 hours and resting for just two to three hours? I know I won't.

Hi soulsister, I don't think two or three hours of sleep would be enough for me either. Thanks for commenting.

I have a read one book that talk about how long do we need to sleep for a day! And the doctors advice us to sleep at least 8 hours per day to balance your all activities during the day. Lack of sleep is one of the reason of despress, stress.... So i don't think sleep two and three hour is healthy!

Thanks rinaaus, it seems even doctors disagree on this.

Well they say the aveerageis 8, but I think it depends a ot on the individual. Famously, someone like Margaret Thatcher always said she could survve on 5. Yet I've read people like actress Penelope Cruz and tennis star Roger Federer, need 10 hours a night. I admit, if left to ny own devices, I naturally sleep for 10, and wake up naturally feeling great! Sadly - during the working week, I can never get that amount though, and have to manage with 8, which means I am constantly shattered by the end of the week. Any less than 8, and I actually become physicaly ill - heacaches, migraines, nausea, palpitations - the whole thing! So, as I said I feel it is a very persoal, indivudal thing - no right or wrong.

I do know that it does depend on the individual, but anywhere from 5-9 hours, myself I would love to get as much as possible..^O^ But I get around 7-8 hours.

I think that differs among different people. My mother sleeps for five hours every night. I feel she is healthy. Only if we get used to our living habit, healthy will get along with you.

Hi thathalazarini, Thanks for commenting. Yet more proof that it depends on the individual.
