why do people smoke

everybody knows that it is injurious to health still people smoke. what urges them to this slow poison?

I don't smoke but my husband does.
He was 13 when he started. Don't know if it was peer pressure or that he tried it on his own and just liked it.
He tried to quit twice while we were married (12 years) but he failed both times.
He knows its bad for him and I am guessing when he was 13, he didn't realize how bad it is to smoke.
