Hip Hop isn't killing Rap. Rap (Rhythm And Poetry) is part of hip hop. Although I assume your question (from 4 years ago:) ) is based on the division between "real hip hop" heads and the the rap music that gets the most exposure and is therefore hip hop's ambassador to the world. It's all hip hop. Some of it's good & some of it's bad. Most of that is subjective but in general the longer a genre is around the more it changes. From many perspectives much of it loses authenticity and gets watered down but truthfully (at least in my opinion) it's just like a tree. The trunk being the genre which connects most directly to the roots (toasting, dj's, breaks etc.) while the big branches would be the different sounds (often regional) that develop over time. The smaller branches being the extensions of those sounds. For example, for many years (in the short history of hip hop) you could hear a song and know it was "west coast" hip hop... However, on the west coast there were niches specific to certain areas that were only distinguishable to those aware of the differences. At the same time there were sounds that were known as west coast here on the west that the rest of the world wouldn't necessarily recognize as a west coast sound...either because the sounds was an even smaller branch or because it was more closely connected to the trunk/roots etc. The same thing or at least similiar things were happening all over the country. Artists in particular regions were working to expose there regional sound to the world. We had Two Live Crew and Public Enemy happening at the same time...totally different but both rap and both part of hip hop. This is all if we think of it as a tree but in the big picture Rap woudn't really be it's own tree because music (or possibly art) in general would be the tree and all the genres and sub-genres would be branches like a ridiculous family tree with way to much data to study & retain. Anyway, all of that to say that rap isn't killing hip hop & hip hop isn't killing rap.

Actually, hip hop is the culture, whereas rap is a part of the hip hop culture. Other elements of the hip hop culture include breakdance, graffiti and DJing. So no, hip hop can not be killing rap.
