Finding New Job Before Resigning in Current Job

Somebody help me with this. I am really, really tired of my job. For two years, I feel that I've been doing the same old things. I wanted to resign and find a better job but doing so would be very risky. I already tried applying before but the interview invitations was always scheduled on the time I was performing a critical part of my job. Now I am thinking of resigning first so that I can have all the time applying but isn't it too risky to be vacant if nobody contacts me?
