So, music snobbery really bothers me, you know: those people who put crap on bands or genres that you like just because they don't. Even if they've never listened to the band, but their friends don't like them or something. Also, there's music snobs that only like one genre, and will not give anything else the time of day. For example, I enjoy country, metal, punk, rock, world/foreign, pop, alternative, hard core, hip hop, r&b, rockabilly, instrumental, classical and more genres, and I get told that I cannot enjoy all of these styles. I appreciate music for its sound, lyrical content, talent of the musicians etc. I'm interested to find out who is a music snob and why, and hear the opinions of other people who are opposed to music snobbery. Thanks, Malyck

Cosign, i gotta admit im not a major fan of things like pop music though e.g. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake or any of that, mainly because i find it really corny, sugarcoated and that their is no skill in it other than having an good voice and looking pretty, mainly because most of them artists don't write their own music and things like that, Whilst i have respect for genres like Rock, jazz, soul and hip hop because their is an element as skill and deepness invovled such as poetry, lyrics, instrument playing and self-expression.

Thanks very much for the response, I imagined that everyone would take 'pop' to mean bubblegum, time-wasters such as JT and Britney. I suppose that 'pop' is the easiest description of the upbeat, 'poppy' sort of music that I also have an appreciation for. I think I managed to leave soul, funk and jazz out of my original list.. oops. I have respect for any artist who writes their own music and/or lyrics, even if I don't enjoy listening to it. Thanks again for sharing your opinion, Zee. =D

I don't actually think my favourite songs are the best, but I think there are some that are just crap. Some people like songs that are off-key and have retarded lyrics. And they're not retarded in a funny way, they're just stupid. So, I can't help feeling that anyone who likes those songs are a bit stupid. After all, you can't consider something stupid to be intelligent unless you're actually stupider than that, right? Plus, music snobbery is fun. It's rather amusing to let people know that you scorn their favourite music enough to ignore them on that basis alone. =P

Yeah, I guess that's true, but then again it's all about a manner of opinion. Some people like music that's stupid and doesn't have any real substance. Just like they may like tv shows, people or movies that are just silly, that we don't like, but they think are awesome.. I don't really think anyone has the right to put something down to someone who likes it just because we don't... Still.. it happens all the time... Anyway, I mainly don't like music snobbery in the sense that people aren't even open to listen to something new, and just dislike it from the beginning because it's of a different style to what they're used to. I think that's a bit immature and stubborn =P

I don't dislike stuff just because it's a different style. I dislike it because I've tried listening to it and hated it. I can't tell whether or not something is stupid unless I've actually heard it, y'know...

yeah, definitely. there's lots of things I've listened to and not enjoyed, but I think everyone should give it benefit of the doubt to begin with, and then they're entitled to hate it, love it, or whatever. =D

That was the problem I had with the music department at my college, they were a bunch of music snobs, so I left. Music should be expression and it should be what you want it to be.

I had the same problem when I was studying music, even in high school. I was disappointed with the direction everybody wanted to take, and their lack of musical flexibility. If it was something slightly different from what they thought was 'the best', then they wouldn't even give it the time of day. I still look forward to a musical collaboration with a group of like-minded, open people. I'd love to make some of that life-changing music & give people goosebumps! =P Thanks for yet another reply, Rogue =D

When you get right down to it, everyone is a music snob. You have to be, because you must think that the music you like is great or you wouldn't like it. Everyone thinks they have good taste in music, even if their tastes are totally different from everyone they know. Even if you like music from many different genres, there are some genres you don't care for, or artists within genres that you don't care for but are still popular with others. You think your choices are best because they are based on your taste, and others like theirs best and disdain yours. The greatest thing is to share music, music you like, even if it isn't popular, well-known or liked. Get someone else to lend an ear and introduce them to something you enjoy. Have an open ear when they do the same. It's a good thing we don't all have the same taste in music, some musicians wouldn't make a living. It's okay to like your music best, as long as you expose yourself to lots of music and don't box yourself into only one kind of music.

Hi Rollo! Thanks heaps for your input, I suppose that was a different angle that I hadn't really taken into consideration, about how each person believes that their taste in music is 'the best'.. (which is true to them, I suppose). I agree that there are definitely some artists, if not genres, that I don't care for, but I think 'real' Music Snobbery depends on your overall attitude to music. Personally, I don't think that there is anything more beautiful and magical than the language of musical expression, so I am always encouraging others to share their musical likes, and keep an open mind to some new musical flavours. *imagines living in a box full of one type of music* nope, not for me! =P Thanks again, Malyck.

I definately love country music above anything else, although I'm not too fond of some of the older style country with pick strum and everything. Probably because I was brought up listening to country and I write country songs myself. Having said that, I also love many others styles. Don't care much for grouping them. Just whatever sounds good. I usually don't appreciate the lyrics until I've heard the song a few times. I particularly like unique sounds, acoustic, african, even hillbilly and bluegrass. Anything really

Surprise surprise re: country music! I never would have known, Dana. =P Yeah, I'm not all too fond of grouping/labeling the musical sound, but in this case I suppose it works, it's definitely easier for the majority to understand what style you're talking about =] The "particular likes" that you listed are great, thanks for contributing =D

I used to be a music snob, because I was only brought up listening to a little bit of music, the types that my parents and brother liked. It wasn't so much that I didn't enjoy other music, as that I didn't know any, and I always felt silly when people were talking about music. Since I've been using the internet, and made more friends, i've gotten much more interested in music and new genres, artists etc.

It's great to hear that you're expanding your musical 'vocabulary', so to speak. Music is such a huge, influential part of my life, and so I love knowing that other people love and appreciate it too. It doesn't sound like you were quite a music snob, maybe just a... newbie. =D
