I get the concept, but why would they be considered essential items? Are we really so bad off that every child needs a bullet proof backpack?
I have an 8 year old, and I just can't see buying a backpack like this & telling her that she needs this to keep her from dying if someone brings a gun & shoots up the school.
What does everyone else think?
Here's the link to the article my husband found on Engadget:

I had not seen the bullet proof backpacks, very interesting. Much like health, prevention is worth a pound of cure. Schools having a comprehensive multi-hazard emergency response plan, training teachers and students on what to do during an emergency, practicing these procedures, and including local public safety (i.e. fire, police, EMS) in the process would go much further to safeguard students.
You might also inquire about your school's Threat Assessment program. The US Secret Service, FBI, and several other agencies have reviewed the perpetrators of many different school shootings. They have put together a process that identifies the behaviors that lead up to someone committing such a violent act. They have found that students do not just "snap". A Threat Assessment Program gives the school the tools to identify and provide intervention (i.e counseling, etc.) to troubled students before they reach the critical point.
Message me if you would like more information.

hmm..while i can see and understand the reason for them..i just dont see a bulletproof backpack being a lifesaver. i mean, its on their BACK. or more often hanging from one shoulder.
sure sure it might save a kid if they were "lucky" enough to be hit in that relativly small protected area. but the school shootings more often than not have the kids sitting in their classroom, backpacks on the floor next to them etc. i guess they could be used as cover, but i just dont see them making a significant difference.
now a full bullet proof vest would make a difference, but damn..i certainly hope schools have gotten THAT bad!
