Shares or Fixed Deposits?

I have known people to make lots of money in shares and then also lose it very fast. Whereas the fixed deposit system is reliable, it pays very little interest. How does one make money without losing it fast . I am a zero at shares and my friends often tell me to invest in shares. I barely make two ends meet, so investing in something risky is repulsive to m e. Can anyone help me understand?
