Okay so you're given this offer let's say - which would you choose? I'd choose 5,000 and go to a justice of the peace. $5000 is a good down payment on a house!

I agree. I just can't see spending $15,000 on a wedding. I'd take the $5,000, go to a judge, get married and then use the rest to start our new life. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I can't see it either - even if - when - I get rich one day. OR spending several hundred or thousand or shoes and clothes - on one item or pair. I'll probably still shop in thrift stores - I still think its the best place to find a variety of different clothes - and likely I'll shop on Ebay because I can find vintage clothes on their too - decades older then thrift stores that maybe go back to the eightees - never the fiftees or earlier. I love old opera coats and those old nurses cloaks from like WWII, it be neat to have those. Gunne Sax dresses and blouses - not the more peasanty stuff. Anyway, 5,000 on clothes that will go out of style next season or on one day of your life is just not worth it to me. Peace, my friend.

$5000. I chose the justice of the peace when i got married. I didnt have money to throw a big fany wedding. I could have saved for a year and probably had my dream wedding, but i didnt do it. I figure why waste all that money. I even had people why did that tell me "dont spend a lot of money and go crazy or you will wake up the next day and ask yourself what you did." I just invited close friends and family and it was still the best day of my life.

That's sweet, nmhschic - and practical. Weddings are about announcing to the world that is your friends and family that you love this person and want to spend all of your days together and build a life. Its a rite of passage - its not about spending thousands on flowers and tableclothes and such. Have fun mylotting nmhchic, and thanks for participating in my wedding discussion, I do appreciate your perspective.

It all depends on why I am marrying. If it is out of love, the family isn't really involved, I would elope. but if I am marrying a close friend of the family or it was an arranged marriage i would go for the big wedding.

I'd use een less than $5000 on the wedding and out as much as possible into investing in our future whether it be in stocks and bonds, money market, or a down payment on a house. Weddings only last a day. Good investments can give u a good lifestyle. And since most marriage fail due to financial pressures, it's best not to waste money from teh start and invest it in your marriage and future together.

A practical response! Its very true, many marraiges falter or collapse due to financial concerns. Weddings are expensive and I never liked a crowd.

I would take the $5,000 and go to a justice of the peace, like you. I have no desire to have a big fancy wedding, and neither does my fiance. We would probably spend a little of the money to buy some nice clothes for the ceremony, but other than that, we could use it to pretty much pay off our car, which would be a wonderful thing to be able to do!
