How Do You Avoid An Argument, Anytime?

How do you react when someone says unkind things to you? Do you look back meekly, hoping that no one notices that your eyes are becoming watery? Or do you retort and challenge the person, only to regret later?

I quietly say my piece and then walk away...it takes too much effort to argue.
