Remember in the book the rules of goblin ownership is not the same as what wizards believe to be ownership. Simply put, Neville was able to retrieve the sword from the hat, because true Gryffindor's can do so. Being that the sword had been bought by Gryffindor, himself, even though Griphook had the sword in his possession, it wasn't truly his (Griphook's). Therefore, the sword will appear out of thin air practically (from the hat), no matter where it was beforehand. I imagine Griphook was sitting silently, holding the sword in his hand, enjoying the fine goblin craftmanship, then suddenly, it just vanishes from his hands and reappears where it rightfully belongs when needed.

I agree with your stance about how only true gryffindors can pull the sword out of the hat, but i believe you misunderstood the concept of goblin ownership. Goblins believe that everything made by them is rightfully theirs, and even if a wizard pays for an item, they are really just "renting" it, which is why Griphook disagreed with the gifting of the Tiara during the wedding.

Well Dumbledore says in the the last book of the series "harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" that in Hogwarts help is given to those who seek it.And more than once it was the sorting hat which delivered the help.Remember in "Chamber of secrets " the sorting hat delivered gryffindors sword when Harry required help. And i believe its the same that happened here help was given to Neville when he needed it.
