I encountered a poisonous snake yesterday next to my water barrel. I was dipping water and noticed it - 8 inches from my feet! It went into a nearby wood pile and I called my neighbor. She came with a sharp hoe and eventually between her efforts and my Laborador dog who found it, she killed it while it was coiled to strike.
We discovered it is a Cottonmouth - and the rare occurrence of coming up so high on land instead of being near the tree brush and roots of the river below.
Has anyone been terrified of snakes? I went to the internet and located valuable information about the ones here in Arkansas. I have great respect for them and now, much knowledge and lots more understanding. I still fear them a little, but not as much as before.
Please share your stories with me.

I am so glad that you were able to see this snake before walking on top of it, my dear friend...
There are many types of snakes who are native to Northwestern Arkansas....living in the country as you do, calls for the type of knowledge that you have gained...
Carry that big stick with you when walking around out there....I know that Shawna and Dora are keeping their eyes on you constantly to provide protection to you..
Be safe, my friend.
