Here in Toronto there is a great deal of demand for live in caretakers in particular for the elderly and disabled. However, the person applying for such a job needs qualifications such as courses taken at a community college in related subjects and experience. Experience is usually gained by taking a job with Visiting Homemakers who send the person to different homes during the day. The pay is not very good, usually just above minimum wage but once experience has been gained a person seeking such a job can register with an agency that places live in caretakers. The family who hires such a person has to pay benefits to the Government such as CPP and a decent salary to the person as well as adequate time off. Sometimes caregivers from other countries make private arrangements and are exploited by the families for whom they work.

Oh, I see. Well, I suppose it would also depend on some experience and qualifications, also on the size of the place. I live in a condo and we have had many changes of the super (caretaker) because either he refused to take a 10week course at a community college or he was not able to perform duties other than cleaning. In a sizable building there are machines to be monitored, logs to be kept, saunas and pools to be looked after and chemicals to be monitored. I guess in a very small building it would be easier to find a job to to clean and be on duty most days of the week.
