How rare is it for Goldfish to fight with each other? My kids decided they wanted a fish tank so we decided to start them out with goldfish and we have 3 big gold ones 1 little calico and 2 big calico and 2 black ones. One of the big gold ones has part of it's tale bitten off and the black one has a big white spot on its side that looks like it got bitten. I've watched them but I haven't seen anything so I guess the only thing i can think of is that they are fighting.

I've been keeping fish for a good number of years and i've never experienced goldfish fighting. Do you keep janitor fish in your tank with the goldfish? It's quite common for them to bite or should I say suck goldfishes, that not only do they damage the fins but the scales as well. Another probable reason for the bitten off appearance is that your fish has tail rot and antibiotics should be applied to the water (you can buy that at your pet store). The big white spot is most likely anchor worm erupting from under the scale(Ick are many small spots and they occur mostly at the fins and tail). This is quite common in goldfishes and medicine for this is also available at your local pet store.

The white spot on the one is probably Ick which is a disease that fish get. You should get some treatment for that. It's also possible that Ick ate part of the other one's tail as well. I've never heard of goldfish fighting, but I suppose it couple probably happen.
