I wouldn't say that celebrities adopting kids from developing countries was 'unheard of' ten years ago. Mia Farrow had a 'rainbow family' long before Angelina Jolie ever thought of such a thing. Unfortunately this backfired on her when her adoptive Korean daughter, Soon-Yi, ran off with her stepfather Woody Allen! But yes, it has become more prevalent in recent years. Personally I think it is quite a selfish thing to do. Think of all the money these celebrities spend on their children, both in obtaining them and in bringing them up. They have everything in the world they could ever wish for. Now think of what that money could do if it was given direct to the town or village where the child was born. It could provide a better life for EVERY child living there rather than just one specially selected for its cuteness. Do these people really think about the implications of taking a child away from their native culture and language, sometimes even their surviving famiy, and bringing them up in a completely foreign environment? I'm sure some do, but with others, it just seems like they are doing it because it is trendy and babies are cute.

i never knew about Mia Farrow..well thanks for that adding to my awareness..you are right in saying that celebrities spend so much money on a single lucky kid instead of donating it for the development of a particular town where this is actually needed and would have been useful too...its true they are choosy in adopting kids..its very thoughtful of you talking about the affect of taking the kids away from their original culture ..but i think if the babies are very small in age there is no such problem..i know what you meant actually..i agree with you that most of the celebrities do it for the sake of more popularity on listing of generous people and many of them try to copy it for the sake of following trends in celebrity arena..

As an adoptive mother, whose boys are now grown and look like me, because I am part German and they are half German, when we were looking for babies to adopt, we got this from the pro abortion crowd, 'There are so many unwanted children in the World, why not adopt a handicapped, mixed race, or the child of a different race?" We were not skilled enough nor had enough money to adopt and raise a handicapped child, and we preferred to raise our children in our own culture. Now here are celebrities who have the finances to afford the medical treatments I could not, and have enough to afford the medical, physical, and emotional treatment needed for a handicapped child and people are angry that they adopted a hard to place child or children? They can take the children around the world, have them tutors so they can learn of their original culture. Why they can even take them to visit their home country and give them advantages the ordinary couple can not. In many cases, they are saving the child from a short and miserable life. More power to them!

you are right in your own way suspenseful..as long as they are doing it without any selfish motive they are doing the best that can be expected from them..but this is not always..for the baby it tis always beneficial although..but again the thing is in this way only few of the babies can survive from miserable life and the needy are in millions..

It may not have made the news, but that doesn't mean it never happened. It's not exactly widespread, is it? I can think of a couple of celebs who are doing this, but maybe I just don't follow tabloid journalism as much as the next guy.

Better things to do? Well, considering that it costs so much to adopt a child from overseas by a normal person, it's hard for anyone else to adopt a child unless they have some sort of financial backing. Not to mention, children overseas waiting for adopting aren't always kept in the best 'temporary' housing. They're treated a lot worse than children in our adoption systems. So, what is better than saving a child's life? Plus, a lot of celebrities, especially the ones that adopt children from other countries, also donate a lot of money to important causes. AIDS, world hunger, violence, etc. They have the money, those that know they have more than they'll ever need and actually donate it are doing a great service.

it seems to be the 'cool' thing to do...its costly so not just the average person could do it...my hubbys sister and brother in law adopted 2 girls from china and it cost $20,000 each... but as for 'better' things to do...what is better than saving a child's life??

yes you are right cher913...almost all of us have good intentions for donating for children societies but what about our celebrities..do they do it to be more popular or what?...its good if they are doing it for all good reasons...but don't you think they can also do it by donating their money to various child organizations..i mean child adoption is the best thing to do as far as they are concerned..but they can do the other way too..
