I got this hysterical e-mail from one of the Pagan Yahoo Groups and I just had to share this. See how many you can relate to: You Might Be A Pagan… 1. When you're sworn in in court, you bring your own grimoire. 2. Painting yourself blue, spiking your hair, and dancing naked around a bonfire sounds like large amounts of fun. 3. When asked if you believe in God, you ask, "Which one?" 4. You know what "widdershins" means. You know when to apply it. 5. You think The Mists of Avalon should be a religious text. You use it as such. 6. You have friends who say they are elves. You believe them. 7. You commit blasphemy in the plural. 8. Upon dying, your first thought is, "Darn it, not AGAIN." 9. When you say "Mother Nature," you don't mean it in an anthropomorphic way. 10. You know that there are exceptions to the laws of physics. You've caused them. 11 The first thing your guests say is, "My, that's a nice...altar. ..you have there." 12. You understand the symbolism behind a maypole. 13. You've ended a phone call with "so mote it be." 14. Your children go around telling people that "the Goddess loves you." 15. On Halloween, you yell "Happy New Year!" at passers-by. 16. You know that Christmas trees were originally pagan symbols. That's why you bought one. 17. You have a frequent buyer card at the local antique bookstore. The proprietor of said bookstore picks out anything to do with the Celts and saves it for you. 18. You think Mercedes Lackey should be a cultural icon. 19. Gaia is NOT the lady on Captain Planet. 20. You have an entire spice cabinet and you don't cook. You know that laurel and bay leaves are the same thing. 21. In Religion 100, you were disappointed because they didn't cover YOUR gods. 22. You know that there is a right way and a wrong way to draw a pentacle. You can explain the difference. 23. You've spent the last year and a half looking for a familiar. 24. You talk to trees. They talk back. 25. You know dragons and faeries exist. You've seen them. 26. You've been seen talking to cats. They talk back. You understand what they're saying. 27. You've seen "The Craft." You know where they were making stuff up in "The Craft." You have explained this to other people. You can do it better than they did it in "The Craft." You know it's a load of crap. 28. You're reading this page. You understand what it's talking about. You have more to add. Amazing how many I can identify with...I would say numbers 2,3,4,5,12,15,20,22,24,26,27, and 28...oh as for number 24--I do talk to trees, but so far they haven't answered me yet How many can you pick out as true for you?

Funny! Hmm...2, 9, 12,16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27,28... I got married on Mayday (Beltane), and we had a Maypole. Grandma wasn't thrilled. (But hey, he's Irish and I'm Scottish-what can I say?) I have a huge herb garden full of just about everything you can think of. I have bundles of dried leaves hanging up in weird places. I talk about all the stuff I'm going to do with them but never do. The garden has gone rogue and I like it that way. :) I can add one- #29. You can quote the "Wicker Man." (The original one.)

Oh my! This is GREAT! 5. You think The Mists of Avalon should be a religious text. You use it as such. - I SWEAR THIS SO DESCRIBES ME! I ALMOST FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR WHEN I READ IT. Here are the others I identified with : 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 16 (though that's not why I bought it), 19, 24 (haven't talked back yet), 25 (haven't seen them yet), 26 (haven't talked back yet), 27 & 28 And on 15 - I had never thought to do that but will remember to do so in the future LOL. Thanks for sharing this with us Pye!

I actually have something about it on my myspace page as a note under the 'Who I would like to meet' section because I have King Arthur & Morgan Le Fay listed. I strongly believe/feel that there is some truth to the King Arthur legends. There are some levels of truth to all legends. I don't agree with the Roman twist as depicted in 'King Arthur' the movie, but more along the lines of 'The Mists of Avalon' (the book) and various other works of art. Although 'The Mists of Avalon' is a work of fiction, to me it's more like an actual depiction instead. It really hits home.

I notice you also pay tribute to Mists of Avalon on your page over at Yuwie..right? The book of course was SO much better than that mini-series, but I feel in love with the series too. I'm a real King Arthur nutcase too...LOL--I thought the most well, dismal movie about King Arthur was Excalibur..just a bit depressing for me

as for #16, I know that Christmas trees were originally pagan symbols & that's why I WON'T buy one. Well, that & the cats would think its a new toy. As for Mercedes Lackey - lets leave her alone - there are some people that are so mad at her for not writing more Diane Tregarde mysteries, they just didn't sell well enough to write more! I've heard her say so herself.

I couldn't imagine not being with a tree for Christmas time. A tree doesn't seem to impress my two cats, and leave alone, but I used to have a cat that loved trees--you should have seen the expression on his face when I took it down..he was genuinely sad and would follow me practically out the door when I hauled it out

I've been out of my parent's house for over 30 years & for the last few years there they didn't have a tree. When they moved in 1963 they got an artifical tree & I learned when I was in college that the reason was because I was always sick when they had a real one. My former roomie ALWAYS wanted a tree, but only a real one. I said NO. No tree to tempt the cats or to make me sick. So, no real ones, no artificial ones, no trees. It was also pointed out at church the pagan start to the religion - heck, the trees were planted over where a scarifice of a bull took place - and finally got her to back off some from wanting one.

Trad Craft outlook on it. 1. When you're sworn in in court, you bring your own grimoire. it's just a book. my honour is what it is, book or otherwise 2. Painting yourself blue, spiking your hair, and dancing naked around a bonfire sounds like large amounts of fun. it does sound fun. it also makes me thing of the Feegles in Pratchett. 3. When asked if you believe in God, you ask, "Which one?" yup. 4. You know what "widdershins" means. You know when to apply it. yup. although i prefer sunwise and countersunwise 5. You think The Mists of Avalon should be a religious text. You use it as such. never read it. but in my understanding it's somewhat innacurate 6. You have friends who say they are elves. You believe them. yes, then no. otherkin tend to be attention seekers 7. You commit blasphemy in the plural. oh Gods, Godsdammit. yes. 8. Upon dying, your first thought is, "Darn it, not AGAIN." I know I've been here before 9. When you say "Mother Nature," you don't mean it in an anthropomorphic way. yup. and she can be a cruel and neglectful mother at times, the old girl. 10. You know that there are exceptions to the laws of physics. You've caused them. if you mean Magic, every Magical rule fits the rules of physics, rather than breaks it. Magic is just another kind of science. 11 The first thing your guests say is, "My, that's a nice...altar. ..you have there." my Altar is outside. but people do notice things in my house that give some clues. 12. You understand the symbolism behind a maypole. the phallic symbol. white ribbons for semen, red ribbons for blood. a symbol of life and the mating of the Gods to give us life. the dancers feet tap out the rhythm of a raised heartbeat, and bring the Earth to fertility. close enough? 13. You've ended a phone call with "so mote it be." no, it sounds pretensious. 14. Your children go around telling people that "the Goddess loves you." I have no children, and would raise any not to push their religion on another 15. On Halloween, you yell "Happy New Year!" at passers-by. oh yes. and we get the most trick or treaters ever, even in our small village 16. You know that Christmas trees were originally pagan symbols. That's why you bought one. yeah. and we have presents on the Solstice 17. You have a frequent buyer card at the local antique bookstore. The proprietor of said bookstore picks out anything to do with the Celts and saves it for you. nahhh, they keep hold of things on folklore for me. 18. You think Mercedes Lackey should be a cultural icon. definitely not. 19. Gaia is NOT the lady on Captain Planet. well that's right. but to me she's nameless. just the old girl. 20. You have an entire spice cabinet and you don't cook. You know that laurel and bay leaves are the same thing. I do cook. I have a lot of inedible herbs in my herb garden though, and I do have them other than just in the kitchen 21. In Religion 100, you were disappointed because they didn't cover YOUR gods. My R.E. Teacher called me idiosyncratic in one report 22. You know that there is a right way and a wrong way to draw a pentacle. You can explain the difference. fraid so. 23. You've spent the last year and a half looking for a familiar. no. if you have one it will come. 24. You talk to trees. They talk back. I wouldn't say they "talk" back, but they do show you images and ideas. 25. You know dragons and faeries exist. You've seen them. Faeries, yes. vindictive little buggers. dragons I think are more symbolic 26. You've been seen talking to cats. They talk back. I'm not a fan of cats. dogs, yes. and again, not so much talk as show you images. I've been able to tell people what their dogs enjoy doing because the dog has shown me. 27. You've seen "The Craft." You know where they were making stuff up in "The Craft." You have explained this to other people. You can do it better than they did it in "The Craft." You know it's a load of crap. The Craft is a load of crap. with a couple of grains of truth. 28. You're reading this page. You understand what it's talking about. You have more to add. hell yeah. scared yet.

I don't have an altar per se..although I do have a little set up thing on top of my baseboard of my bed...but I think people just might have a few clues that I'm a pagan..gee, such as a blue-toned pentagram painted permanently on my wood floor in my bedroom...a traditional black witch's hat hanging from the ceiling, and each wall of my bedroom reflects the four elements...the east wall with items refecting the eastern air/spring elements, the southern wall items reflecting the fire/summer elements, the western wall the water/fall elements and the northern for earth/winter elements..lets just say I have a VERY interesting bedroom...LOL

I am familiar with most of the things, pyewacket. I have done a bit of research on the subject. My interest developed as the result of a curious mind, and once I got started I had a desire to learn more. I don't happen to have a grimoire, but I do have a copy of The Mists of Avalon. I find the subject of the occult very interesting.

That is very true, pyewacket, and I feel that most of the problems that are happening with the earth now can be traced directly to mankind's disrespect for nature. Native Americans have always respected and honored the land.

I think I've always been drawn to the pagan/wiccan world and followed a lot of the concepts all along without realizing it...since you and I are of Native American heritage it blends the pagan path blends very well and is similar to the shamanistic aspects and has great respect and love for all nature just like Native beliefs

Ahuh... If you worship or talk to trees you are pagan? Paganism is something to do with the disbelief in jesus christ. And its unfair! They only baptized those against Chriust or anti christ as pagans. I dont now if I can consider myself a pagan. Hehehehe. I am a catholic by nature since birth. But such debate and stand on paganism is just nothing but a debate on faith. we can not tell them to believe in this or that. But if you say if you are talking to a tree or anything aside from GOD or JESUS CHRIST, its not paganism its more on idolism. If you idolized an artist, dont say that you are also pagan? nope--- it depends on what really is the meaning of paganism. And its upi to you. we have lots of meaning on that area. Even a church priest can not exactly answer that.

Penn by your definition when you stub your toe on the coffee table and swear at it (or curse it in some way) then that's idolizing the coffee table. Just because you talk to something doesn't mean you are praying too it. There is a difference :) Otherwise talking to my hubby might mean that I am idolizing him.

Paganism is a term that covers a wide range of different religions and spiritualities. what they have in common that gives them this title, is that it focuses either on the divine creative forces of nature (either as a deity or as something more similar to "the force" in Star Wars) or on the spirits of the ancestors. as a result it covers a lot of very different paths. in all honesty I can't think of any Pagan religion that practices Idolatry. certainly some will use a physical representation of a deity or spirit to focus on, rather like some churches have figures of Jesus or the saints, no one is worshipping the figures, just using them as a focus on those beings. no Pagan path I've yet encountered actually worships a physical object.

I think I'm confused here..like huh? Like penn..pagans don't worship trees and even if we did it wouldn't be idolism. And I hate to say it, but if one does worship anything, even God or Christ, it could be considered idolism--no?

*giggles* The only one I can see that I really don't appreciate is ending phone calls with "so mote it be". I agree with Galena that sounds pretentious. =p My child hasn't told anyone the Goddess loves you yet either, but he's just now learning to say "I love Mommy". There are priorities you know. Give him another couple of years, and who knows which Gods he'll be talking about, given the options he'll be offered. =) I have been known to when someone say "God bless you" respond with blessings in the names of various other Gods in return. In kindergarten I got sent home from school for saying "May all the Gods bless you" to a teacher, even though I had good intentions.
