I am new to the world of crafting and just learning the basics of some things. I know how to sew...nothing too fancy! I can cross stitch and that's pretty much it for now! I have always been interested in making my own candles. I love candles and think it would be great for gifts for this upcoming holiday season. I finally have some time on my hands to give this a try...but I don't know where to begin! If you have any pointers for me...I would love to hear them! Any tricks to make the scents nice...tips to make them burn better?

Container candles are the easiest to make. You can use just about anything... jars are the most popular, of course. You can also use tea cups and stuff like that. When I get in the mood to make them, I go on ebay and search for "soy wax kit." They come with wax, wicks, scents and dye chips (and sometimes warning labels and something to keep the wick stuck in place in the bottom of the jar or whatever). They also come with instructions usually.
You can melt the wax in the microwave, which is nice. Soy candles throw scent really well whether they're burning or not.
A lot of the sellers I've found on ebay who sell the kits have HUGE selections of scents, including some holiday specific scents. I was thinking that it would be cute to do hot chocolate scented candles in cute coffee mugs from the dollar store for holiday gifts this year. Just make sure you're using containers that are heat resistant (like glass or ceramic).

I love MarthaStewart.com. Martha has lots of crafts and she does them all so they look professional. She's made a lot of candles on her shows over the years and has a whole craft section on her website. She's made beeswax candles and candles inside sea shells, which were pretty. Good luck with your new craft. You can buy lots of candlemaking supplies at stores like Michael's, HobbyLobby, and JoAnne's, as well as online. I like to use the local stores because often they run 40% off coupons that can greatly reduce your purchase price for wax or scents.
