i love it! for those who might not have heard of it, it's this dough and ghee pastry (?) popular in south east asia. for a much better descriptino, this site says it all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roti_prata for some reason it's one of the favourite breakfast and supper foods. even though it has very little nutrition - just starch basically, it just creates cravings in some people, like me. is this one of your top 10 favourite foods? what do you eat it with? fish curry or meat curry? I actually like mine with sugar. :)

Yes, roti prata is rather popular over here too. I like my roti prata with egg in it. I think it makes the meal more nutritious. Ilike it with or without curry. Nowadays, there are so many varieties of roti prata but I have tried all these yet...

yes it rocks! but sorry I don't have a recipe - it's too convenient to pop down to the local stall to get some, and too complicated to make - it requires this huge metal heated plate, which is scary!

ahhh... the crispy little piece of fried dough, dipped in curry and savored with a big glass of teh tarik (pulled tea) is really heavenly! This is really a very versatile dish! You can eat it with curries, sugar, with eggs, cheese, meat. Heck, you can even decorate it like a pizza and eat it with a good cold glass of ice tea and it is still wonderful! It is one of my favorite dishes.

OMG one of the most hilarious discussion and an eye-opener for me, if ever there was. I went thru all the discussion and was laughing inside thinking of the high status our humble paratha is given worldwide. What you & wikipedia say as roti prata are actuall two different versions of the Indian bread. Roti is more cheap and healthy. It is made of unrefined flour which is kneaded into a dough, and then rolled flat with a rolling pin and then toasted on the oven indirectly on a hot flat metal plate (the plate need not be huge and this can be done equally well on a flat non-stick frying pan). If done properly, you get the softest and fluffiest healthy roti which can be had with anything…even plain butter. Paratha (or what you say as prata) is the less healthier version since it has some fat in it and has to be fried in oil too. The process is same and both refined and unrefined flour can be used. Paratha can be stuffed with anything and everything and fried crisp in oil and had with pickles…yummy but less healthy than roti. Both roti and paratha are everyday staple food of us Indians and can be had anytimg in the day. Also the ready-to-eat version of roti/paratha is nowhere as tasty as the freshly-cooked ones which we make at home but then that’s true with the frozen pizza too!.
