When you add someone as your buddy you have to check the box next to notify me. When one of your buddies post a discussion you will be notified by email. I hope that answers your question.

if you have the boxes by the little mail icon and the notify checked by each of your buddies then you will get emails letting you know when they start a new discussion and when someone posts to your discussion or comments
