My Computer Is My Brain

Anyone else affectionately consider their computer to be their brain? Personally, if it's not in an email, or a directory, or a bookmark, or a doc file somewhere, I probably won't remember it. My computer is divided into two primary partitions (besides the OS partition): Data and Media (left & right hemispheres). Anything that could be considered "information" goes into the appropriate subdirectory on the Data partition. Music, movies, funny video clips, or other similar stuff goes into the Media partition. When my hard drives crash (as they have repeatedly), it's like I just lost my mind. I don't know anyone's email addies, phone numbers, or website URLs. All my creative work is generally gone. It's like having amnesia. After much painful experience, I now back up my hard drives at least twice a year. It's still frustrating to re-load everything if the computer goes down, but at least I've only lost a few months worth of data that way. Anyone else out there like me, or am I just way too OCD? *grin* ...also, anyone have any good (and by good, I mean easy and cheap) backup techniques that don't involve burning massive numbers of CD's or DVD's? ~David

The unfortunate thing is, while I rely on my computer to remember everything, my computer is just as disorganized as my actual brain.

*lol* ...I hear you! It's great when I have time to get things organized, but usually things slide for a while and get really disorganized until I no longer know where half my data is and have to use the Search function to find stuff. Ever six months or so I have to take a few days out and re-catalogue everything, just to get re-organized. Still, the 'Search' function on my computer works better than the 'memory' function in my brain, so I can't complain too much. :-) ~David

Well mine isn't exactly my brain. My real brain (the one inside my skull LOL) is kind of odd in that I remember information like phone numbers, addresses, email addresses and birthdays so I don't even document them anywhere on my computer. But I use my computer for all kinds of other things like my journal, storing pictures and music, and the reviews I write for Epinions and Viewpoints so if I lost all of that I would be seriously bent. I have recently started storing some of my reviews and pics on a jump drive but that's about all. On my work laptop I have a thing called MIP installed (I have no idea if it's available to the public) which costs my employer $3 a month and it does automatic back ups twice a day which is nice. We used to have to do it with disks which was a pain but we talked them into MIP and it makes life so much easier. The cost far outweighs the risk of lost business data. I need to look into something like that for my personal laptop but I have a hunch it aint gonna be $3. Welcome to the site, David!
