Do you purposely wait to eat certain things until after your kids go to bed?

I do. Now don't get me wrong. 99.5% of the time I'm fine with sharing food with my kids. But every once in a while, I will wait to eat a drumstick or a special treat so that I can actually enjoy it all to myself. What kind of food do you like to keep all to yourself?

LOL Glad to know I'm not the only one LOL Most junk food I will wait because my son tends to eat more junk than real food if he sees junk in the house. I don't allow hime to drink anything caffinated and if I buy chips I usually let him have a small baggy but no more.

Exactly! I do it with halloween candy as well. My son would probably eat it all in one sitting then be bouncing off the walls all night LOL Kids need to be taught to eat as good as they can even if we don't and what they don't know won't hurt them at this point.

I'm really good at sharing with my son... I don't like hiding food from him.. He normally gets after all the good treats anyway..

Damn straight I do...I hate sharing the good things with them. Though now they are getting older that I can tell them no. Or I just buy extra to share with them.

I hate saying no because my dad used to do that to me. I just try to buy extra!

Hi Laurla.
Actually, I did once. My husband came home with a bag of my favorite chips. Now, our son can eat a full bag of chips in one sitting. I don't like to share the chips with him because for one thing, it's too salty for him and another thing, I can only eat a few pieces when I get to share a bag of chips with him.
So, that night, I immediately hid the chips and waited for our son to sleep. And when the cost was clear, I opened my bag of chips and went to heaven.^_^

I usually share things with my son without any problems. But sometimes I wait until after he's in bed to eat ice cream or something else that has a lot of sugar in it. I don't mind my son having some ice cream, but only earlier in the day. I don't like him to have any dessert after dinner, because it makes it harder to get him in bed. So sometimes my husband and I will have some after he goes to bed. Or if my husband is already gone to work, I will occasionally have ice cream by myself.
Otherwise there isn't anything really that I wait until he goes to sleep to eat. Some days I do wait until he's already asleep to even get time to eat, though. But I usually just eat regular food that he would be allowed to have, too.

We made the mistake of giving our daughter some ice cream right after dinner once. I thought it would be out of her system by bedtime...WRONG!! She was all over the place. Hasn't happened since. She doesn't get sweets any later than 4pm anymore, unless its a rare occasion

For the most part I will share but yes, there are certain things that I keep all to myself. Once in awhile I will treat myself to a cheesecake. The good kinds are fairly expensive so it's a rare treat. I just don't feel like my little ones could really appreciate it so I keep it to myself. Anoth more common treat would be my French Vanilla coffee or cappuchino. First of all that isn't something I WANT them drinking, secondly it's more of a "Mommy's time to unwind" kind of drink.

I usually wait and eat dinner once my kids have gone to bed, just so I can eat in peace and not have to get up 20 times to stop the fighting, or get someone a drink, or gte them a snack, whatever. It is so much better to eat by myself anf not have to worry about anything else. I don't think there is a certain food that I wait to eat by myself, unless it is like the last piece of candy that I want =) Then I will wait until they are in bed and eat it up by myself!

I love to share food with my family. I love to have my kid to eat more. But when I was a kid, I was left tasty food by my mother who always show much love to me.

Thats awesome that your mother was like that!! Now that you make that point, maybe thats where I learned some of it. I know my mom would hide stuff in her room so that she could just have it. But she was hiding it from me & my grandfather. lol He loved sweets!!

I don't wait until he's gone to bed, but I have learned (the hard way) that if I want any bacon for breakfast I need to eat what I want while I'm cooking it. I remember cooking a package of bacon once (planning on using some for sandwiches the next day in addition to breakfast). I gave my ex 3 strips, I had 3 strips and I gave my son 1 strip. He ate his, then he stole and ate 2 of my strips (I was foolishly saving it for last), 1 of his dad's strips...
AND...
When I went into the kitchen to put the bacon that had been cooling away, I found that it was ALL GONE!!! I know that some of it was chewed to a pulp then fed to the dog... but damn! A 4-year old ate almost half a package of bacon (I cut the packages in half when I get them and freeze half).
I only cook what I plan on eating/serving now. And I eat mine before he realizes I'm cooking bacon.

I started laughing as soon as I read this. Boy do I know how you feel!! I eat my share of bacon while I"m cooking too. My husband and daughter both LOVE bacon and they can consume a lot of it. I have to smack my husband because he comes into the kitchen to steal some. I also put any leftovers I may want for the next day before I serve dinner..otherwise..there may not be any left. lol

I don't have my own children, but I live with my boyfriend who has two much younger siblings.
We always wait until they're in bed to eat certain foods because otherwise they will pester us for things that they're not entitled to have - especially a treat when they've been naughty.
Normally it just so happens that we're not hungry until after they're in bed anyway =P

I devour TONS of ice cream when my kids aren't around. I am pregnant and it is one of my cravings but I don't want the kids to get in the habit of thinking that ice cream is ok to eat all the time. I give it to them when they eat their dinner and it isn't too late in the evening. Also, they have to be good to earn a treat like that.

My mother was a very funny hypocrite about this very subject. If she were having shrimp, everyone got to have shrimp. Or steak or chinese take-out, any of those "special" treats. It wasn't until I was older that I learned that what had started out as a FULL pound of fried shrimp, made it home as a 1/2 pound - to be shared all around! LOL Mom would take hers off the top! Even to the point of eating her shrimp lobster sauce IN the restaurant while waiting for fried rice and egg rolls to bring to us. It really was win-win!
When I had kids of my own, we were big into healthy eating. Veggies, no meat, tofu, fruit, etc.. So, I would sneak the occaisonal buffalo wing or barbeque rib. What I found out after my third child was that my mother was feeding my kids the same treats whenever we would visit her! THEY were sneaking food from me!! LOL She got busted when I finally figured out that my baby was not saying "Gamma, me!" He was really asking her for MEAT! To this day, my kids' idea of a guilty treat is a double-cheeseburger with extra bacon!
Now that I am married a second time and am a bit older, I love to eat alone. Period. No voices, no discension. Just nice, easy enjoyment and digestion! Good to know that my family was not the only one with this issue and funny to read some of the stories of how people handle it. Good discussion. Laurla, and welcome to myLot!
