Valkyrie, for the uninformed, is the tentative title of Tom Cruise's new movie. It details the true story of the failed attempt to assasinate Adolf Hitler with the use of a briefcase bomb, and the subsequent punishing of the soldiers who plotted it . Tom Cruise plays Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, the anti-Hitler Nazi soldier who masterminded the assasination. He is considered as one of the Nazi era's few heroes. The Germans are aghast that Cruise is set to play the title role. This is because in Germany, Scientology (which Cruise belongs to) is not considered a religion but a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people. Scientology is taboo over there.
I know that Tom Cruise and his controversial Scientologist views are old news. But I'd like to know if you think he should play the role of this beloved hero. In addition, what do you think of Scientology in general? I've noticed that since the couch-jumping on Oprah, his debate with Matt Lauer and Brooke Shields over the use of anti-pyschotic drugs, and his whirlwind romance with a younger bride, Cruise's popularity has waned. Do you agree?
