What is Hip-Hop?And is Rap?

I think the difference between the two from what I understand is that hip-hop is more of a culture, the whole thing including the music, the lifestyle, the language. While rap is just the words of the song or the song itself. I have lost touch with rap/hip-hop music it has gotten to be about the same thing and I think most of the time it is sending out a negative message.
