has anyone else noticed a dating error in the deathly hallows?
in chapter 16 you first get to "see" harry potters parents graves and what is written on them, well it says that they died in 1981... from previous books we know that they died when harry was 1 year old, and this year in this book he is 17... the dates just don't add up, that would make him 27 (like me lol).

I think you're onto something there. I was gonna say that the books first came out in like 1998? Somewhere around there and that you should count each year from there, but that still doesn't add up. But do the books ever really say what year it is in them? We're assuming each book is for the current year, but all we know is it's in modern times because of the appearance of certain modern technologies like computers and such, but that doesn't necessarily place an exact date to them.

True enough, but does she give the current year that book is set in? I haven't read this book yet. I own it but I'm putting off reading it simply for the fact it'll be too depressing a thought the books I've loved for song long are finally over...ok, I'm a wuss what can I say

You missed out the ten years he grew up at the Dursleys and/or that 2007 has no bearing on the book dates.
Or have I simply got the wrong end of the stick here? haha

Harry was born in 1980 and the events of the books take place between 1991 and 1997. The publication dates can't possibly affect the book dates anyway, because the books were not all released one year apart.
I'm pretty sure almost all the dates mentioned in the books are accurate, though there are some inconsistencies on the Black family tree.
