Our friend had another emergency. It seemed she phoned us and said that she could not get a DVD, The Queen, to play on her computer. She does not have a TV and uses the computer instead, but she could not get it to play. So since we were bringing her my Master Cook Cd, my husband decided to see what was wrong. The sound did not work, and not only that, we could not get the DVD to play. So he downloaded Realplayer, Quicktime, and Winamp but that did not help either. He tried to load an old copy of Nero but it was like Windows XP, only good for one machine. That did not help, so he checked the speaker connections, found it was fine, and then checked the operating system All the settings, codecs, etc. are there, but there is no sound and since the video and sound are not connected, we cannot play the DVD. My husband is not skilled enough to go to the Bios. Does anyone here know why this is happening? She changed from Xp home personal to Xp business. Does that have anything to do with it? She has a Gateway and it is quite old, about twelve years.

We figured that it was a driver, but the sound card is included on the motherboard. It is not separate so we would have had to put in another motherboard.

That's a relief. Her computer is twelve years old and I doubt the motherboard would still be available.

there are some things that you should really check...
first off... the bios settings... and you dont really need skill in order to play with the bios... you just have to understand what the switches do... just read.
make sure that (if the sound card is onboard) it is enabled on the settings... usually on the peripherals section.. and should be disabled if you do have one installed.
make sure that it is not muted in windows
make sure that the right drivers are installed.. check if it would play any music cds and data music
make sure that you have the right hardware driver installed.. year model, os model, signatures and of course hardware name

When the man who installed the computer called back, he told my friend that it was possibly the drivers. We did check to see if the mute was on, but the vocal information did not pop up and we did try the other things. My husband is worse with computers than I am, and I would only touch the bios if my son, the computer expert is with me.

All I can tell you is I lost my sound also with the first computer I had. I was at that time running windows 98 and the computer appeared to be A-OK but no sound. I had to take it in to get fixed and it turned out I had deleted some crap I had no business deleting and I took out the sound card completely. Sounds like your hubby knows a fair bit about computers, too bad he wasn't able to fix the problem. It cost by the hour to have them fixed and in the end we can guess she'll be told it's time for a new puter. Take care and have a Great Day.

She had to call the man who installed her computer to see about it. I had a problem like that with mine, but all I had to do was to reboot and it worked.

We tried that so it is the driver. Everything else is there.
