End of August, is Summer Really Over?

The topic of discussion at the office was the end of summer. Many believe that summer ends with the last week of August. Not for me! I stated that I believe that summer goes on through mid-October and sometimes beyond. When do you feel that summer is officially over?

Sideriologically, summer ends about September 21. Culturally in the US, it ends on Labor Day, whereas in Europe, it goes to the end of September. I think it's summer whenever (ugh!) the temperature exceeds (loathing!) 80 F. I love going to the shore in mid and late September! As far as I'm concerned, summer has overstayed its welcome the first day the temperature hits 85 F.
I **hate** summer! I **love** winter! Give me snow up to my chin and I'm happy. Put me in 80 F heat and I wither and collapse.

I don't mind summer as long as it isn't humid. The snow is pretty, but hate shoveling, driving, and freezing in it. : )

For me summer is over in August. I have time off in the summer because I babysit for teachers kids. So I feel like my summer is over when they come back in August.

Summer officially ends September the 21st or 22nd unless you live in the Canadian prairies. In that case, Summer ends when the leaves all turn yellow and red and you have to wear a wind jacket. In some case it is the middle of September and in some case it is the middle of October. So I have a little while to wait.

Well I don't like the heat. I like to believe it is labor day that signals the end of summer.
I guess if you are up North though summer ends a lot earlier then it does in the south, for example here in NY, the high today was in the 60s and it is now 58. My son is in Georgia, where it is now over 20 degrees warmer then it is here.
Summer is relative.

For me summer is over when it is no longer 80+ degrees out! I loathe summer for the simple reason of...it's hot! So as soon as it cools down I'm happy again. To me Summer is the time period when it gets up to the 80's and stays summer till it goes back down!

Summer for me doewsn't end until I have no more flowers fruits or veggies left to tend to. HAHAHA. That's usually the first frost and or snowfall. So it's actually not too far off. Our average first snow possibility is September 15th. Uggg! Too soon for me.

I couldn't say for where you live. For us, winter is nearly over & spring will start. The official first day of spring is the 1st September, but we can still get cold days right up until the end of October.
I am very much looking forward to spring.

I knew the seasons down under but it's always interesting for us Staters to hear this from down there. Well over there. Whatever. HAHA!! It seems like a whole different world but backwards at times.

I feel that summer is over when my daughter starts back at school- Really it’s back into the swing of things and Fall starts- I know it’s just summer vacation- but it feels like summer- the nights get cooler- the days get more busy- it’s no longer the lazy days of summer!

LOL, Elusive , summer is officially over to me when the temperature no longer reaches about 75*. I'm eagerly looking forward to that day this year. I see tomorrow we are shooting for 93*, and that doesn't fill me with hope that summer is nearly through.

Hi there. Here in new zealand, summer has not begun, but by the looks of todays weather, it seemed like it was a typical summers day... Here in NZ, I feel summer is gone in may-june months and so on, until end of august and beginning of september...

I don't know where you from as the whole world has almost different ending time of every season. I am from Pakistan and here the summer ends at about end of August. In first week of September, the nights are cooler but still days there is summer sunshine. The real winter comes by the end or mid of October and stays till end of February.

When the leaves turn and it keeps getting colder, I feel like Fall is here. This year, the leaves started turning in August. Some years, most years, it starts in September, but it doesn't look and feel like fall until October. So most years, I agree with you. But this year, summer was really short up here. Cold until late into summer. Also, we had roller-coaster temperatures. Nothing for 40 degree difference in 24 hours. I was hot and cold - alternately all summer. It was really weird this year. Take care

I too feel that we were cheated out of a decent summer. Not many days could we spend outdoors enjoying the warming rays. With the humidity so high we spent more time inside.

Labor Day seems to be the official day for me. After Labor Day weekend all of the touristy type places go to slimmer hours or close completely. The kids are back in school. Life just seems to go in a whole new direction.

I used to believe that the end of summer was when the kids go back to school. Now that they're gone, I see the leaves starting to change colors on the trees, and the weeds going to seed. The nights are becoming much cooler, and the days are a little shorter. I don't exactly feel that summer is over, but it's making the transition into fall.

I think summer ends the 5th of July around here....LOL...It is getting kinda cold lately..I combine summer and fall so that when I see snow than summer and fall are over...I am not ready for snow..My leaves are turning though....
