Are Pit Bulls banned in your area?

Pit Bulls are not expressly banned in my town, but the insurance requirement is enough to discourage some people ($100,000). Oddly enough, the dangerous dogs in my town lately have been dogs in the Spitz and small Terrier (not APBTs) groups.

Here in Peterborough Ontario Canada there's all kinds of rules and so on. Like you cannot own a pitbull that was born after the ban that went into place in 2005. My pitbull falls 2 months before the ban thank god. They have to be fixed and on a leash that is no more then 3 feet long and muzzled. To me this is really unfair because other breeds do not have thee kinds of rules even though they can be just as dangerous. The whole pit bull thing is out of control and I think its totally unfair.

Thanks for responding. You know, I was just reading about Ontario's province-wide ban. I'm planning a move to Alaska and wanted to see if I would have any trouble getting my ABPT over the border. This is mass hysteria and misinformation at its finest! The "logic" behind the bans are completely unfounded.
Was it in Canada that a ban on Pit Bulls resulted in Rottweiler hysteria, or another country? If it's not one breed it's another. Sadly, Pit Bulls are just the underdogs of the moment.

Fortunately I live in an area that is very pit bull friendly. There are a lot of people around here that have them. I happen to have 2 myself. I love the breed & I think it's sad that they are so misunderstood. I also think it's pathetic that so many people breed them wrong & then abuse them to cause them to be mean. But it's not the dog's fault, it's because of irresponsible people.

I completely agree. Training, patience, discipline, and love make all the difference in any dog. I was able to rescue my boy from a pretty sad situation when he was less than five weeks old. In the middle of an Iowa winter, he was curled up in a box with his siblings, trying to stay warm. I don't think they were allowed out of that box much because he was covered in urine, skin irritation, and scratches. I was told that the "breeders" fed the entire litter of eight puppies a handful of dog food per day. I didn't think he'd make it.
He's now a rambunctious, social 60lb baby who loves nothing more than to sit in my lap nuzzling against my shoulder. As the Supreme Court of Alabama ruled, there is no genetic evidence that one breed is more dangerous than another simply because o its breed.

The rule around here is that if you have a pit bull, it must be fixed....even the pit bull mixes. We have a pit bull/lab mix and he still had to be fixed. I had no problems with fixing him though, considering that the animal population is out of control and all animals should be spayed/ neutered!

i also live in des moines iowa 2 mins from downtown and definately in city limits and i know the law but i think it is so stupid. i rent and have a boxer/lab/pit mix. i have a feeling i will eventually run into problems so i keep all her paperwork saying boxer\lab. she is all white so yes she does look like a pit and that is what is dominate but paperwork does alot of talking for me. people know, i know they do and i dont care. We moved here from Maryland last year and had no idea of the law until we got here because we do not have that law there. We lived in baltimore county and they just were not allowed in the city or they were captured and uthenized automatically.I was bit by 4 small dogs growing up, never a big dog. She has been in our family since my kids were 2 and 4. She acts like a mother to them eventhough she has never been a mother. I couldn't imagine a dog better then her. I really hate when people only learn ahat is on tv about them. If anyone would use common sense anymore, they would know that the only thing you see on the news is bad stuff. Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see people. Come on already. Gwatson...lets start a petition. lol
