My 2 year old son has not been sleeping well the past two nights as his nose was a bit congested and he was coughing every now and then. What do you normally do when your child has the cold and cough? Do you immediately bring him/her to the doctor? Or what home remedies do you use to make your child feel better?

I normally use the vapor plug ins. They plug right into your wall outlet - they smell like Vick's. I have under the doctor's discretion given them Triaminic Nightime Cold and Cough. Since he's only 2 - I would definitely check with the doctor.

Steam can help.. give her lots of fluid. ( for my daughter, I make sure she takes plenty of water when having cough and colds.) I make sure that her soroundings are dust free all the time. I consult my pediatrician if colds and cough persist in 5 days or more..

I have a steamer I put in my daughter's room. Normally they suggest cool steam but I can't imagine why. Who wants their room cold when they are sick with a cold? I put a hot steamer in my daughter's room; it makes it like a sauna in there. Besides, they always tell you to run the shower and sit in the bathroom so that seems to be hot steam to me.
She has always had problems with colds, congestion and coughs. Everytime she got a cold mucus would build up and she would throw up. Last year she had a cough that was so bad she was throwing up all day long. It was just because of the mucus build-up. She is eleven years old and we have had this problem with her since she was a toddler. Of course she was a colicky baby and didn't take well to whole milk so we have her on lactose free milk. That seems to help reduce the mucus but she only has it on her cereal. She never drinks milk. And when we know she has a cold we eliminate milk completely.
I think the best thing you can do for your son is put a steamer in his room. That should make him more comfortable. I would only take my child to the doctor if I thought there was an infection which is indicated by green snot or a very bad throat, fever, or if he is rubbing his ear.
I hope he feels better soon.

I give my kids, Ginger essence (few drops) with teaspoon of honey. This will help to reduce the nasal congesssion and any phlegm in the chest. IF this does not work then you will have to consult a doctor.
In any case I believe that any cold or cough shouldnt prolong for more than 5 days...
Hope your son feels better soon.

If the cough is very bad and sounds like it is ripping out of his chest than I take him to the doctor otherwise, I would talk to a pharmecist and see about something over the counter in a cough medicine for his age and also the vapourizer is very good!.hope he is feeling some better now as it has been three days.
Sorry it has taken me so long to get to this but I have been working far too much lately and have not been on here at all for a few days now :(
Hope your son is well soon! :)
