Does anyone home school their children? My son is in 7th grade and because we have moved he has started a new school district. He came home from school today and asked why I couldn't home school him from now on. I guess some kids that he knows are now being home schooled and he has decided this is what he wants to do too. I don't know anything about it, don't know if he is too old to start with home school, or anything. Can anyone help me, please? Thanks in advance!

actually in my country, home schooling is not as popular as what you have in there in your country.
very seldom, people here in my country do home school. for some reasons why they home schooled their kids because he or she has abnormalities that cannot be exposed outside a society and must be given full attention from his or her parents and teacher.
but for normal kids, home schooling is not good for them because nowadays people get knowledge from the society and has really been to it or been done it literally, so community is one of the greatest influence in each of the people's lives.

It seems that home schooling here is a growing thing. I will have to take the time to assess the situation and then make the neccessary choice. thanks!

In my country we are not familiar with home schooling. It is only done by very rich people and even the very rich ones prefer to attend school rather than learning from home. Attending school lets your child learn social skills which he couldn't get if he is home taught. I suggest that you don't give him home school because this will only limit his ability in social skills, and in the future he will face problems in work and in life for not being able to adjust himself properly in the society. However, everything is in your hands. I respect whatever decision you make. God bless you.

This is a common misconception about homeschool. My children are homeschooled, and they regularly interact with people from all different backgrounds, of all different ages, and they do just fine. Social skills are not learned in a classroom, sitting at a desk, and being told to be quiet. There are many other opportunities, such as playing at the park, taking dance or music lessons, participating in 4-H or other clubs, and attending family gatherings where children learn to make friends and get along wih other people.
If you think about it, a school environment, where you are grouped together with only same-aged peers for the majority of the day is a very artificial social environment.

I know that some people feel this way, but he has been in school for the past seven years and now seems to want to do this. I will have to explore all avenues and then make a decision. Thank you!

I don't know much about the specifics but as far as I know it can be started at any age although I'm not sure that you'll be able to start right away. It's not like you'll be able to pull him out of school tomorrow to start homeschooling him. Homeschooling does take a lot of dedication on both sides though so the first step would be to talk to him more about it to make sure he really understands what homeschooling will mean...he's not just going to be staying home not doing anything all day. Usually you will need to be approved and have a lesson plan made out. Throughout the year you will need to keep a portfolio of his wirk to be reviewed at the end of the year to make sure you met the state requirements.
I did a quick search for information related to your state. i didn't look it over very closely so I don't know how helpful it will be but it's a start anyway. Here are the links:

Thanks! I tried a couple of different websites, but some of them had not been updated for a couple of years. I will have to look further into it. I know that I would be dedicated to it, but I have to wonder whether my son would. I will talk to him, though!
