collecting as a hobby or investment?

i'm into paintings for the longest time. at first it was just a hobby. whenever i come across a nice piece i buy it and find a nice spot to hang it and enjoy looking at it. before i knew it i had just so much that i don't have a wall to hang them. a friend of mine suggested that i sell some of them so i can upgrade my collection. little did i know that there are a lot of buyers for my paintings, and believe me there's money in it. now i'm supporting up and coming young artists in one of the towns here in the philippines. paintings are good investments and i was even surprised that some banks here accept them as collaterals for loans. my hobby turned into something profitable. i'm sure some of you out there do collect. can you share. good day.
