Where are a cat's cuticles?

Awhile back, I was cutting my cat's claws and noticed some blood. Of course, I stopped cutting immediately and got really worried that he might have been cut on his paw. But, later he seemed fine and when I checked the blood had been coming from his claw and not skin.
I'm kind of worried about cutting his claws again, because I think I clipped into his cuticle and it caused him pain. I thought the cuticle was at the top of the nail, near the fur, but that doesn't appear to be accurate.
Has this ever happened to anyone here before? Could someone give me tips on how to find a cat's cuticles so that I don't cut into them again? And, if possible, what type of claw clippers should I be using (brand wise) to get the best results and for the least painful clipping experience. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that's what I did, accidentally. It's been awhile now and he is fine. His nails are back and so far I've been concerned about cutting them again. Not sure I want to put him through that.

They actually have a blood line in their toe nail. It is usually when the nails starts to curve and get thick. We just use regular scissors we picked up at the pet store. Thankfully the majority of both of our cats nails are clear os the line is pretty easy to see. We have the cats almost 2 years and I just started being okay with me cutting their nails. My Aunt refuses to cut her dogs nails anymore because she had an experience like yours when one of them was a puppy.

A blood line? That could be what I cut. It was an accident and now he's perfectly fine. But, I know it probably hurt. It was an accident and it made me feel so bad. I did not want him to put him through that again. Perhaps, I will just clip the sharp tips of the nails and that will be enough. Thanks for the tip.

Hi there...cats have blood vein inside their claws called a "quick" and when clipped they will bleed and can cause discomfort. Here's a wonderful website on how to trim cats claws with photos too: http://www.catscratching.com/htmls/article.htm .
