A MAN who stabbed his puppy to teach it a lesson has been banned for life from owning an animal.
Matthew Maddock, 25, stabbed and slashed his six-month-old bull mastiff Coco after it soiled the bathroom floor.
Police found the badly injured animal lying in a pool of blood.
Maddock told them he had to do it, otherwise the puppy would never learn.
Maddock, 25, from Livingstone Avenue, Aigburth, admitted causing unnecessary suffering at a previous hearing.
Liverpool magistrates gave him a four-month suspended sentence and ordered him to do 150 hours’ unpaid work and pay costs of £60.
They also told him he could never own an animal or even have one travel in the same car as him.
Police were called to Maddock’s flat at 6.15am on June 24 after reports of a disturbance.
When they arrived, it emerged that Maddock had been the only one in the flat.
Amanda Haycock, prosecuting, said Maddock told them the noise had been him shouting at the dog.
After noticing blood stains, officers were directed to the bathroom where they found the dog shaking and looking very scared, lying in a pool of blood with wounds all over its body and a major stab wound to its stomach.
A blood-splattered knife and a mop pole were nearby.
Ms Haycock said Maddock told officers he had to teach it a lesson while it was a puppy or it would never learn.
In his defence, Phil Libe told the court that Maddock had been drinking and had a drinking problem as well as issues with substance abuse.
RSPCA Inspector Claire Cain said: “This is a particularly vicious, intentional act of cruelty. The sentence reflects how seriously these matters are taken, although I’m disappointed the sentence was not tougher.
“For this man to stab a dog to teach it a lesson is beyond belief.”
Coco, who has been renamed Hope, survived and is being found a new homed.

That is soooo sad! I dont understand why people would want to own pets if they are going to hurt them like that. My dogs are a part of my family and I would never hurt them. It would be like hurting my own children. I hope he gets the worst punishment. I am glad to hear that the dog is doing well.

Forget about prison, this man should be sent to a mental institution. It seems he is suffering from serious mental problems. Why would a person like this even want to own an animal? It seems his act was out of hatred, not love. People who hate animals are mentally unstable.
I only thank God it wasn't a child instead of a puppy.
I hope this man is ordered to go into rehabilitation for his substance abuse problems and also undergo psychiatric treatment for his crime. Unbelievable, and sickening.
I am so happy that the dog survived and hope that the poor thing can wipe this monster out of his memory. I hope his next home is a loving one.

I can't imagine the puppy lying in it's own blood. Our family have our own dogs at home and we treat them as part of our family or more. Dogs know how to love and most importantly they also want to be loved. Dogs are not toys. Dogs have feelings they are like human beings, they get hurt and they sometimes feel happy. I don't understand or I can't think of any appropriate reason why COCO's owner stabbed COCO. Not a single guy who is in it's proper state of mind can come to think of stabbing his/her own dog. That guy has no heart and really doesnt have any right owning a dog again. If he cant be patient with his dog what more if the guy will have his own children. Maybe he will do something worse a real father could ever think of doing.

No other animal on earth has the intelligence, and the stupidity, of the human animal. This is beyond belief. How any man drunk or not would see this as an appropriate deterrent is very hard to believe. He should be prosecuted just as though he did this to another human being. He truly is an evil person.

I think the punishment should have been much more severe! There is no reason for a person to treat a dog like that! It's so sad that someone would even think about doing something like that to a poor defenseless little puppy.
Why would someone like that even want to own a dog? There are so many ways that you can train a puppy. There is never any reason to purposely hurt your dog. Especially in a way that could kill the puppy!

How sad...I'm glad the puppy survived this terrible ordeal. This man should have been sent to jail. There is no reason to ever inflict this type of abuse on another living creature. Thanks for sharing this article with us.

He didn't get any jail time? I think his punishment was too light. That fine is also too little for something like this.
