Doctors Telling Patients to STARVE Themselves??

A good friend of mine, is slightly overweight, and having some troubles trying to conceive their second baby (they have a few other problems affecting this) she knows she needs to lose weight and get healthier, though her weight keeps increasing, no matter what she does or eats. She decided to go to the doctor to ask if he could get some hormone tests done on her, she had a feeling her hormones are a bit out of balance and that's why she gains weight easily.
The doctor in turn told her she just needed to lose weight. She explained everything. She is a recovering (struggling) bulemic, and a recovered anorexic, she also struggles with depression from losing her son a while ago, he was born at 24 weeks..
The doctor told her he doesnt care how she loses the weight, as long as she loses it. He said she needed to only have a daily calory intake of 600. She said that's not healthy, that's a starvation diet, she's been to nutritionists and they have told her a daily intake of 1200 calories is healthy, and 600 is a starvation diet. And is also not good for her, as she is recovering from bulemia.
The doctor then told her that if she thought she knew more than him, then why is she here. And she said i have no idea, i'm thinking this is a complete waste of time. The doctor said you're right, it is a waste of time. So she ran out of there crying. She called me that afternoon and told me what had happened. I was appauled.
What gives doctors the right to do that to someone?? Especially knowing her history. She is complaining to the medical board, but i'm not sure if she will go through with it or not.

I can relate; somrtimes doctors don't think. I have cerebral palsy and doctors frequently say, do, and think stupid things about me and my healthcare. Perhaps your friend needs a primary care provider who has some knowledge of eating disorders and how to care for what to say to people with them. It might take her a little while to find such a person, but it will be worth it.
