The Philippine Eagle is one of the world's most critically endangered and rarest bird. It has been named the National Bird of the Philippines yet a lot of schools still teach children that the house sparrow or maya is the national bird.
What do you know about our Philippine Eagles?

I am sorry to say that I have no idea about this special eagle which should be your national eagle. I hope that this endangered eagle will be well protected by people in your country as it will live on and on. I think that it is necessary for you to let more people, especially your government to make a law to protect it and claim it to be your national eagle.

You are a nice jungle girl. I appreciate your environmental-minded real action in protecting the rare animals. With your help, there will be more and more national eagle to be born for sure. Thanks for your response, jungle girl.

The maya was our national bird but they changed it into the Philippine Eagle. The little bird are many and can be seen throughout the Philippines but the Philippine
Eagle could rarely be seen, unless we go to the zoo. And the Philippine Eagle is really endangered species and perhaps soon we can no longer see any Philippine Eagle. Those who voted for the Philippine Eagle as the national bird were perhaps thinking of the American Eagle, gaya-gaya.

It was the Americans who wanted us to act like the maya, which is actually a species we see even in Europe.
And there are only 2 zoological institutions who can keep Philippine Eagles in captivity, the Philippin Raptor Center in Los Banos and the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City.
I don't think though na we are necessarily copying the americans when we made the Philippine Eagle as National Bird. This is truely an endemic and rare species and it is our own. I wouldn't want to be called a sparrow all my life. Would you?

Oh I didn't recall that Philippine eagle was considered to be the National bird. I thought it was our national eagle or something... I have not been to school lately I guess.... LOL! But I do know how endangered our bird that is. I think our own scientist are making efforts to at least breed them in captivity. I just do not know if they are successful in their efforts. As far as I remember there was one eagle whom they successfully bred they even named it to our Vice President Noli de Castro? I really am not that sure though. Right now I little or hear no more of how the project is going on now. before i can see some coin cans for Philippine Eagle but now I seldom or see nothing anymore.

Yes, it was actually declared our National Bird. In fact we celebrate Philippine Eagle Week every first week of June. Both of these are mandated by law.
There are running projects for the conservation of Philippine Eagles. We jsut don't really receive alot of media coverage. And we have successfully bred 21 Philippine Eagles in captivity. Kabayan, the eagle adopted by VP de Castro is chick number 17.
Thanks for your time rsa101
