At what age did your child stop sucking on a pacifier? Did they ever start?

What is your opinion on pacifiers? I hear that if a child uses it too long they can get bucked teeth. At what age is the appropriate for a child to be off of a pacifier? Who is a parent that never even started their child on a pacifier? I am planning on starting my family and I just need some tips to help me out.

My older son used a pacifier for 10 months (to sleep). I just threw it off one day and he was fine. I don't know about the tooth part because my son started teething at age one and by then he was already off the pacifier.
My second seems to be used to it though. He didn't take to it at first but now needs it for sleeping. He's okay without it if I try to cuddle him and make him sleep. My husband finds it easier to make him sleep using the pacifier (he has no patience)..or else I would have weaned him off earlier.
But having said all that, I still think no pacifier is the best option.

thank you for your response. I think a pacifier probably isn't the best thing either.

I must admit with shame, that my daughter sucked on one until she was 3. My husband and I tried everything, but somehow we always caved in. It wasn't until one night, the pacifier was lost, my husband was working nights, and I had a long day at work, so I just didn't want to look for it. That was the night that we all said rest in peace to the pacifier forever.

wow, your daughter was okay with not having it that night? I know some kids so hooked to it they scream for hours until they have a pacifier. I don't think I will even start the process. Thanks for your response. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

My baby never took to it. I actually wouldn't have for the reasons you describe and confusion as I'm nursing - but they gave it to him in NICU. My mom took my pacifiers and bottles away all ar once at age two. Even the one I id in my crib. She caught me going for it when she took the oyhers away. It must've been traumatizing because I stll remember it today.

That's cool, I heard some babies never really use one, and i think that's good.

My son is 14 and he threw his away at 9 months and he started teething then which was really weird..But my daughter still has her and she is 15 months but she hardly uses it she mainly chews on it or if she has had a bottle she uses it sometimes to go to bed..I keep giving my son and husband heck for giving it to her when she doesn't need it..But I think it will be taken away here very soon.

Both of my children had pacifiers but neither used them past the age of 6 months. For my daughter, I just decided to stop returning it when she continually threw it out of the crib. She never really missed it.
My son was a little more addicted to it as he had some issues with reflux and so he was usually in need of some type of comforting. It helped him sleep usually but about the same time his reflux started to improve, he also stopped using the pacifier.
I don't think either of them had teeth affected by it. My daughter's teeth are straight and even. My son has some crowding issues in his mouth, he gets this directly from my family, so it's genetic.
In both cases it was the hospital that first gave them pacifiers, I didn't even make a choice about that. Since I never had a problem with them giving them up, I didn't mind. I might have felt differently if the kids had wanted to keep them for years and years.

So about 6 months would be cool to start weaning them off of it? thanks for your response.

My oldest daughter was 6 months old when we stopped giving her the pacifier...I'm glad she wasn't attached to it. And my other 2 daughters never would take one..So I was lucky I never had a problem...
