My 24 year old sister is presently on her way to Japan to live for a year. She will be teaching English to Japanese children.
I am frightened for her safety because number 1, she is my little sister and of course number 2, you hear about so much stuff happening to American people over there.
Does anyone know much about Japan and if so are my fears warranted?

I think she'll be alright. she just has to stay out of shady areas and not go pubbing every night, then I think she'll be okay. I think those who got into trouble were moonlighting as street walkers.
I have friends who are living in Japan and it is relatively safe. They kill themselves more often than murder others because it's such a stressful society. I'm sure if your sister finds an expatriate community there they could network and be a sort of support group, especially since it can get rather lonely in Japan since most do not speak English or prefer not to speak English.

I don't know, but I felt safe when I was in Japan. Or maybe because there were lots of friends with us and I was into some program sponsored by the Japanese Government. But we always felt safe taking evening walks to nearby convenient stores, or to some unknown streets. We know very little Japanese language but we survived going to Akihabara, Shinjuku, Disneyland without our guides. Japanese are also friendly. So, don't worry about your sister. She'll surely find Japan a good place to stay. :) Oh, by the way, with my experience, i look forward to going back to Japan.
