I don't exactly pray... I just talk to my Gods. All the time, all day long, like you would your best friend or a family member. It's nothing formal, and half the time it might not even be about something meaningful, it's just having a relationship.
Of course, since I also believe they talk back, most people would just say I was crazy and get it over with. =P
I'm a Celtic Reconstructionist Pagan, and I believe in several deities. So what deity I choose to talk to might depend on my mood of the day, or what exactly is going on in my life... but on the really bad days it's always my primary Goddess, Morrigan, who was the first to reach out to me when I was four years old.

You're not alone in only praying when you need something... I think most people are like that really.
I think part of the reason that I am so religious or spiritual is because in my early life it was pretty much all I had going for me. I went through a very abusive home life, and often didn't have any human beings that cared for me at all it seemed. So I started spending so much time and energy on my spirituality because my Gods did show attention and caring for me in a way human being weren't doing at the time, and that's stuck with me even though I now have my own family (husband and child) and friends that care about me.
It's a pretty common belief that God works through other people as well, so I don't think there's anything wrong with believing that your friends are there for you because of that.

Well sorry to hear that your childhood wasn't all that sweet. But it was really brave of you to turn it into a positive in your favor by making God your ally.I do admire you for what you have done.
But then i have always had friends who were always there for me.May be i am lucky. But then i just didn't have an opportunity to get up close with him.
It may sound like an excuse.
But isn't it selfish to pray to god only when you need help from him and never even think of him when you are comfortable.Well i often do that.So am i selfish??

well you seem to have a more refined spirituality than i do.
Well i also do talk to the power which i know and believe to exist. But nothing elaborate like he way i talk to my friends. When i dearly want something to be done i ask for it to be made easier for me.
It sounds kind of selfish but its what i do.And i don't talk to the power much when everything is all right. Its almost like someone to whom i go with my sorrows to get them set right.
Well usually my friends are there for helping me out and raise me up when I'm down. But who knows if its him doing it through my friends.

hi
my mother is a pasteur so when i was a child i prayed every day. now it's changed I pray less than before. I think most of people pray when something bad happens with them or will happen. When they don't know what can they do, or they know they can't do anything. And that's the point where people - who always say: "i'm not believe in God" too - starts to pray, because no more things they can do. And after God helped them they forget to pray and say "thank you". They recognized prays next time when they're in trouble and pray again...
I pray every time when something good happen with me and pray when something bad, too. I believe in God and his strange.

well my friend thanks for the response.
I have prayed to God ..when i wanted to do well in something.I prayed to him to help me do well in my examinations.I have also prayed when something really bad happened to me like when i broke m arm.But I am afraid its not what people really call prayer.
What is prayer actually?
if its about communicating with the almighty..well then i think i have done it.
if its about reciting written down prayers.. i haven't done it.

you can't categorize who's prayer and who isn't. There's no questions and if you know the right answer you are or will be a prayer. Each person must know what is his / her relationship with God. What level is it? Good, or wrong? What is he do good in his life and what's wrong. Who say sorry for his guilts at the last minute in his life and he is serious God will forget his sins. But don't calculate pre with sins - don't think you make wrong thinks and you will ask God serious for forget 'cause it doesn't work.
My higschool friend told me a story about praying: he had a hard exam and like you prayed to make it good. But there was some difference: he didn't learn anything for the exam. I started to laugh him off and I said: you just ask the God to help you remember what you learned. And that's true. God will not learn substitute you to exam...

yeah..its pure nonsense that people expect god to help them do well in exams without even putting in one hour of serious studies. And they blame god for their not doing well.
Its like this:You do your half and God will be more than happy doing the other half.More than prayers its your action that matters.Put in enough work for your cause and you and bound to be lucky. Its gods way of helping those who do their part well.Make your actions and work your prayer if you want to succeed.

When I was young, I used to pray they prayers thought in school. Praying it over and over again without meaning it. Wondering if they ever get answered.
Later in life when I got older, I experienced a lot of pain in life. So painful that I've begun to lose hope. Until I found a book about prayers. There I realized that it is not enough to pray memorized prayer. At the darkest part of my life, prayers saved me. Prayers that availeth much, prayers that come from the heart, scriptural prayers.
After that I pray everyday, I pray to thank , to praise, for healing, to ask for me and for others. It has helped me to be strong physically, mentally and spiritually. Although I know that I'm still far from the true Christian that I should be, but through the help of prayers I will be.
God bless.

i pray regularly as i have firm belief in the existence of God. it is just common sense that every creation has a creator so there must be a creator of this universe too. and i bow down to Him and thank Him for everything. i believe in the Day of Judgement and heaven and hell so i always ask for forgiveness of my sins. i pray to God for whatever i need, for whatever i desire, and ask Him to lend me strength, and i believe that He being the Creator always listen and those wished that don't come true, there might be some hidden benefit for us from Him and/or He is just testing us for our reaction. every action would be accounted for on that Day.. and i fear the judgement of that Day, so i always pray to Him for forgiveness.

yes.. i turn to Him even in the good times and thank Him for all that He has given to us. yes, you remember God the most when you are in trouble and you are also right that there are many people who don't remember God except for in their bad times. it is all a matter of how much faith they have.
i have a lot of faith in God and therefore i always pray to Him.

Well don't most people think of God only when they are in grave need of something?
Do we see people praying to god in happy times as often as they do during difficult times? If its so..then who can truthfully state that hes a true believer?
Like you said here most people fear Him for what he may do to them at the end..the day of judgment to some..something else to others. Are there people who thank him for their mere existence, their good life...and not just turn to him in times of need or out of fear?
