It would have been stupid to try to jump in. If they are beating an elderly man they will beat someone else too. I would have done just what you said and called the cops and told them to rush...

I believe I would have done exactly what you did. I can't fight, but calling the police is doing something and trying to help.

first call the cops then try to find some help and try to stop the 3 guys from beating the elderly up.

I would have walked to a safe spot, and then called the police making sure I had an excellent desciption of the guys, etc. to give to the Police when they show up just in case the guys were to run off.

I would call the police. I am a former EMT and I know that trying to break up a 3 to 1 fight will not result in the best outcome...call the police immediately. I know someone who DID try to break up a fight between a man and a woman, the fight was ended, but days later, the man retaliated with his friends and severely beat up the good samaritan. Be safe, call the cops, make noise, without getting yourself hurt and without escalating the violence.
